74 Dance Preparatory Programs

The Pilates/Dance Conditioning Instructor certificate is designed to prepare individuals to teach the Pilates Method of body conditioning using the full range of Pilates apparatus as well as the mat work repertoire, the foundation of the Pilates Method. Individuals will be trained to work with beginning to advanced level students and special populations, including dancers and athletes.

The Dance Program offers practical courses in Ballet, Modern, Jazz/Hip-Hop, Tap, Strength and Stretch / Pilates, Barre, and Choreography/Performance Production. Dance students who choose to be more involved have additional opportunities to choreograph, perform, and attend conferences such as the annual American College Dance Association conference and other outreach projects on campus and in the community.

Our Foundation Dance course is designed to give you intense training over two-terms to develop your skills and artistry in preparation to access degree level education. We will strengthen your skills in a range of different techniques while developing you as a versatile and confident performer.

The Associate in Arts in Dance degree will prepare students for transfer into a four-year dance major, minor or performing arts program. It can also prepare students for further study in other dance-related fields including performing, dance teaching, choreography, dance science, dance therapy, dance history or dance criticism. Upon completion of the degree students should be proficient in three or more dance technique styles at the intermediate level, have a firm understanding of dance appreciation and music theory, and be competent in creating and performing dance.

The diploma in Performing Arts offers a well-rounded program focused on developing students’ skills in various aspects of performance. It covers areas like acting, dance, and voice training, helping students build a solid foundation in their chosen field.

The Associate in Arts in Dance is designed to prepare students to demonstrate competence and discipline in the study of dance technique, performance, and choreography and to demonstrate proficiency in group choreography and solo dance skills. Completing this curriculum will demonstrate commitment to the serious study of Dance in technique and choreography and provide comprehensive preparation for upper-division work. Careers for dance graduates typically include performing, teaching, art administration, choreography, dance therapy, and health and fitness specialists.

The Department of Dance offers an Associate Arts Degree in Dance that provides an extensive curriculum in dance theory and hands-on technical and experiential practice in the context of a broader education within the Liberal Arts. Our dance courses meet CSU/UC transfer requirements.

Students will be exposed to the educational contexts of arts and culture and will explore some of the key discourses in Dance, including Dance and Cultural formation, History and Aesthetics. Coursework will be by seminars, practical workshops, engagement with on and off campus dance groups, conferences, and symposia. Dance is a vigorous and specialized area in the performing arts, and is unique in its ability to convey emotional and cultural values. Dance is physically demanding and requires a thorough understanding of aesthetic values. This program is primarily designed for the student who intends to transfer to University of California at Santa Barbara, or to other universities that offer baccalaureate preparation in Dance. Additionally, the program provides an excellent foundation in dance for students interested in other performing arts fields or entry level into the workforce, such as study owner/employee.

Delivered in partnership with The Customs House Theatre, this one-year performing arts programme will help you to learn and develop skills in dance, drama and singing in a professional working environment.
