Students interested in pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree should major in Biology. Students should review the admissions requirements for the veterinary schools of their choice.

Students who are interested in going to veterinary school typically major in biology, chemistry or biochemistry. These majors include most of the required courses for entrance into veterinary programs. However, other degrees can also prepare students for health professions; thus students are encouraged to major in the field where they excel and should consult the pre-health professions advisor about course work.

As a Lindenwood University pre-veterinary student, you will typically follow the Lindenwood curriculum for a bachelor of science degree in biological science. With this degree, you will receive the prerequisite coursework needed to be a good candidate for application to a veterinary school.

Students not in the program may apply to the university as Animal Science Preveterinary majors. Students may apply for admission into the Veterinary Preparation major during the semester during which they will complete all prerequisite coursework. Approval will be contingent upon satisfactory fulfillment of the prerequisites and the grade point average standard.

The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program emphasizes the importance of core training in comparative biology and medicine, including all primary clinical disciplines and domestic animal species. Opportunities exist for elective training across a wide variety of more specialized subjects, such as zoo, exotics, and wildlife medicine, marine sciences, clinical nutrition, and various clinical specialties (cardiology, oncology, theriogenology, anesthesiology, internal medicine, and surgery).

The Department of Biomedical Sciences currently supports three-year residency programs in both anatomic and clinical pathology. These training programs are designed to prepare trainees to become board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathology. Residents are trained in all aspects of diagnostic investigation including cytology, hematology, clinical chemistry, and urinalysis for clinical pathology trainees and surgical biopsy and necropsy for anatomic pathology trainees. Residents participate in weekly journal clubs and attend rounds for histopathology, gross pathology, and cytology. They work closely with students, house officers, and clinicians in the teaching hospital as well as referring veterinarians. Residents are also encouraged to pursue research projects of interest and educational benefit. The goal of the program is to provide residents with a learning environment conducive to becoming highly competent veterinary pathologists with skills in diagnostics, teaching, and research.
