14 Medical Science Pre-Med Degree Programs

The Pre-Medicine program provides guidance on courses, experiential activities, and competencies for students that are preparing to be competitive applicants to Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.), Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.), and Doctor of Naturapathic Medicine (N.D.) programs after completing their Bachelor's degree at James Madison University. The Pre-Med program is a minor that students complete as part of their baccalaureate degree.

The School of Medicine has developed an English Medical Program (EMP) in English, enhancing its international presence and contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge. By leveraging its comparative advantages, strengths, and collaborations with international centers, the program aspires to create a dynamic and competitive academic environment.

As an EU member state, automatic recognition based on harmonized minimum training requirements for sectoral professions (doctors, nurses, dentists, veterinary surgeons, pharmacists and midwives) is provided.

The American University of Barbados (AUB) offers a balanced medical curriculum for Pre Medical Program, comparable to US medical schools and designed to help prepare students to practice medicine in the US, UK, and also the Caribbean. The medical sciences curriculum is taught on AUB's campus in Barbados. The campus is technologically advanced with a new Medical Science Resource center and anatomy lab. Students complete their clinical training in affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States and the United Kingdom. Sessions commence in January, May, and September, with semester terms of 16 weeks in duration.

Xavier offers a 5.5-year program for students who wish to enter medical school straight out of high school. This gives students a 1.5-year jumpstart on pre-med courses that will accelerate their entry into Xavier’s medical program — upon completion, of course, of all other pre-med requirements.

Students who are interested in going to medical school typically major in biology, chemistry or biochemistry. These majors include most of the required courses for entrance into medical programs and will help prepare students for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). However, other degrees can also prepare students for health professions; thus students are encouraged to major in the field where they excel and should consult the pre-health professions advisor about course work.

The Pre-Medical program was created for those students who do not meet the Admissions criteria of SMUFOM based on not completing the courses and credits required for Admissions into the MD Program.

Students interested in pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree should major in Biology or Chemistry (with a Biology minor). For the best preparation, we recommend a double major in both Biology and Chemistry. Students should review the admissions requirements for the professional schools of their choice.

The “Double Helix Curriculum—Translations and Transitions” integrates clinical and basic science throughout four years emphasizing the Biopsychosocial Model.

The UCSF School of Medicine offers a comprehensive, structured post baccalaureate graduate certificate program designed for individuals who have been unsuccessful in gaining admission to medical school or who have completed the required undergraduate course work, but feel they need more preparation before initiating the medical school application process. The program is designed for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds or underserved communities.

University Foundation Programs are designed for those students who have completed their high school or secondary education and are planning for their tertiary or university studies in Europe or North America.
