The Master in Science, Philosophy and Theology of Religions was activated in 2006 at the FTL as part of the Re.Te Institute. (Religions and Theology), with the aim of training in the knowledge of religions and interreligious dialogue in an increasingly multicultural world. Since 2014, thanks to the collaboration with the USI eLearning Lab (eLab), the Master has also been activated in an online formula. Today this is the only available way of using its courses.

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a prestigeous research-based programme. It is perceived as the highest Master's degree. The entire study concentrates exclusively on a student’s chosen subject area. They can determine their subject area by the topic of the thesis, based on the required general criteria of the Master's degree. I.e., in contrast to a traditional Master's programme the MPhil solely consists of a comprehensive thesis without any taught modules. The purpose of this structure is to systematically introduce students to methodological research. An individually assigned supervisor provides comprehensive advice on a 1:1 basis to each student. The supervisor accompanies students comprehensively and in direct contact during the whole time. Therefore, the MPhil also is an ideal distance learning course for those who are interested in a high-quality Master's degree and/or want to prepare themselves for their doctoral studies.
