8 Philosophy Degree Programs

The Master in Science, Philosophy and Theology of Religions was activated in 2006 at the FTL as part of the Re.Te Institute. (Religions and Theology), with the aim of training in the knowledge of religions and interreligious dialogue in an increasingly multicultural world. Since 2014, thanks to the collaboration with the USI eLearning Lab (eLab), the Master has also been activated in an online formula. Today this is the only available way of using its courses.

The Department of Jewish Philosophy (Jewish Thought and Kabbalah) in Bar-Ilan University’s Faculty of Jewish Studies is devoted to the research and teaching of all fields of Jewish philosophy from the classical period until the writing of Jewish philosophy in our days, including the study of Kabbalah and Hasidism. Special emphasis is put on the study and research of philosophical thinking, mystical contemplation, and interreligious relations. Philosophers systematically explore fundamental issues, ideas, and truths to understand better our place in the world and why we do what we do. Among many questions, philosophers consider what it means to live a good life, the ethics of artificial intelligence, and the relationship between the individual and society. The purpose of doctoral studies in the field of Philosophy of Religion is for students to cultivate, in the usual way for advanced studies, their ability to examine, using philosophical tools and approaches, religious phenomena and issues relating to the religious dimension of human culture, including theological thought and its traditions. Students learn to reflect critically on these approaches and their results and to interpret them both in their specific context and within the framework of current academic knowledge. In direct connection with its multidisciplinary nature, this study program develops the skills necessary for analyzing complex issues, and students learn to combine various specialist perspectives and discourses in evaluating specific findings and testing hypotheses, while at the same time ensuring that the methods used are appropriate, the thinking is precise, and complex or controversial problems are expressed clearly. The study program not only leads to the acquisition of expert knowledge and skills, but also develops the ability to understand views, concepts, teachings and theories that are non-traditional or differ from one’s own, cultivates argumentative approaches to critical debate, and refines the ability to evaluate oneself and to formulate one’s own opinion or position.

The BA in Philosophy and the Catholic Tradition allows students to encounter those outstanding figures in the history of philosophy who are also major figures in the history of Catholic thought. The course also presents the Catholic tradition of philosophy to students as a living, dynamic reality, in critical and constructive dialogue with the other philosophical traditions at work in our contemporary culture.

The study of the history of philosophy is a historical as well as a philosophical discipline. It is philosophical because it seeks the origins of contemporary philosophical debates. It is historical because it seeks to understand these origins on their own terms and in their own context.

This joint and international programme explores the traditions, formative processes and mutual interactions of the three most influential religions of European culture and history: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The programme is a cooperation between the four Nordic universities of Aarhus, Copenhagen, Lund and Oslo.
