Our MA Global Philosophy and Intensive Language degree provides a rich and advanced engagement with philosophy which exposes students to a wide variety of global, rather than narrowly Western, intellectual traditions and themes than would be possible in other philosophy postgraduate degree programmes.

Grapple with the insights of great thinkers from across the world and throughout history while developing skills in critical thinking, argument analysis and cultural literacy. We prepare graduates to meet a rapidly changing world. Students who choose to concentrate in philosophy will study ancient and contemporary philosophers as they engage in rigorous debate, ask the big questions and sharpen their critical thinking skills. Students who choose to concentrate in religion are introduced to the academic study of the world's religions. They dive into the sacred texts, rituals, histories and ethics of different cultures while learning to communicate effectively with those who think differently from themselves. The interdisciplinary philosophy and interdisciplinary religion concentrations allow students to craft their own majors by counting up to nine credits from outside of the department toward the major.

This two-year Research Master’s programme is designed for international and Dutch students who wish to acquire the skills needed for a career in academic philosophy or in research. The programme has five specialisations, reflecting the expertise of researchers at the faculty. As a student you will follow intensive Research Master’s courses, and will develop your methodological and academic skills during dedicated Research Methods and Skills seminars. Throughout your studies, you will participate in ongoing research activities and will be assigned a personal supervisor who will guide you as you acquire the skills necessary for a career in research.

Humanities, Philosophy, and Arts examine human values and experience within a wide range of cultures across the globe and over the course of history. Students will study, interpret, and evaluate classic works in architecture, art, literature, music, philosophy, religion, rhetoric, and the theater, and they will encounter questions to which there are multiple plausible answers. The study of language, philosophy, and rhetoric provides crucial tools for understanding and interpreting human knowledge and experience. Students pursuing the program in the Humanities, Philosophy, and Arts will enhance their skills in critical thinking and both oral and written communication. The Humanities, Philosophy, and Arts program prepares students for further study in the arts, history, humanities, literature, philosophy, communication studies, and/or world languages at a four-year baccalaureate institution and provides an excellent foundation for students interested in administration, communications, law, public service, and teaching.

This master programme offers courses in the philosophy and history of science, skills courses to improve your writing, and tutorials in which you work with experts on the philosophy of your discipline. Additionally, the programme will regularly organize colloquia with experts working on the intersection of the philosophy, science and humanities.

The MA course offered by the Institute of Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities is a two-year, full-time program comprising four semesters. Students need to have some philosophical background – a minimum of 30 credits as part of their BA studies.

The study of humanities is concerned with human experiences and the manner through which they have been expressed. Courses in the Humanities Program examine the historical, social, philosophical, religious, and artistic expressions of different cultures and their diverse perspectives on the sacred as well as secular worlds.
