The Ph.D. program in Economics at SMU is the oldest Ph.D. program at the University and has a long track record of providing students with rigorous training in a broad range of fundamental methodologies for conducting economic research. The program is relatively small which allows for an open and friendly environment, and a low student-faculty ratio. Few programs can match the careful supervision, faculty contact time, and individualized mentoring that our Ph.D. students receive.

The Physics Department at SMU is looking for talented people who have a passion for physics and are prepared to seek a Ph.D. in frontiers such as particle physics and the search for dark matter.

In the Ph.D. program, students concentrate either on Cultural Anthropology or Archaeology. Within Cultural Anthropology students may specialize in Medical Anthropology or on Globalization Issues such as Development, Gender, and Migration; Archaeology students concentrate on New World Archaeology.

The Ph.D. degree required a minimum of two academic years of residency as a graduate student on campus or at a research facility approved by the Department faculty; satisfactory defense of two original research propositions; and the preparation and public defense of a dissertation that is a significant original contribution to the advancement of science. Proficiency in a foreign language may be required by the advisory committee.

The Department of Statistical Science began offering a Ph.D. in Statistical Science in 1968. Since that time it has awarded over 185 Ph.D. degrees. The courses in the Ph.D. curriculum in Statistical Science at SMU provide our students with the strong theoretical foundation in mathematics, statistical inference, and probability needed for students pursuing a research-oriented Ph.D. degree.

Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at SMU has a long tradition of excellence in serving people and society. Today, we continue this tradition by developing the fundamental and applied technologies that have an impact on people’s lives.

Students enrolled in doctoral graduate studies conduct dissertation research under the mentorship of expert faculty in the areas of aging, neuronal development and neuropathogenesis, epigenetics and gene regulation, structural biology, inflammation and immunity, drug resistance, cancer biology, and infectious diseases.

Our department fosters a supportive environment through hands-on instruction while promoting the proficiency needed to prepare students for a wide range of career possibilities. Particular strengths as a department include computational and applied mathematics. The department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computational and applied mathematics.
