PhD in Engineering Education. While there has been extraordinary engineering education happening at UConn since 1916, the field of engineering education is its academic study. A Ph.D. in engineering education from UConn will prepare students with the skills and competencies needed to conduct high-quality educational research in the context of engineering programs at both the pre-and post-secondary levels.

Doctoral study provides the highest level of formal preparation before entering the engineering profession. It is both competitive and challenging and offers special opportunities for learning, research and application. Together with their professors and mentors, doctoral students comprise a true community of scholars. The student's advisory committee, which is responsible for overseeing the student's final achievement, is an integral part of such a community.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers degree programs leading Master of Science (M.S.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. To determine the appropriate course requirements the student must first choose one of the two areas of concentration in the Mechanical Engineering Department

Biomedical Engineering blends traditional engineering techniques with biological sciences and medicine to improve the quality of human health and life. The discipline focuses both on understanding complex living systems – via experimental and analytical techniques – and on development of devices, methods and algorithms that advance medical and biological knowledge while improving the effectiveness and delivery of clinical medicine.

Materials science and engineering is an interdisciplinary field that studies the structure, properties, and performance of materials such as metals, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors, biomaterials, nanomaterials, composites, and more. It combines principles from chemistry, physics, and various engineering disciplines to understand how materials form, how they behave under real-world conditions, and how they can be used to create new technologies and products.

Graduate work in chemical and biomolecular engineering provides an opportunity for students to further their studies and research. Our graduate program uses cutting edge tools, and resources so that we can contribute to shaping new methodologies for chemical and biomolecular engineering research. We help provide coursework and guided research for the M.S. and Ph.D. students. This exposure allows students to have core principles augmented that students receive as undergraduates. Their research gives unparalleled experience in problem solving, a key component to challenging issues of today for a better tomorrow.

The Ph.D. program is designed to prepare students for a career in research. As such, it requires considerable self-directed study and independent research.
