The UCSB Department of Geography’s joint Ph.D. program with the Department of Geography at San Diego State University is distinctive. It brings together two outstanding departments that complement each other. California State Universities do not offer stand-alone doctoral programs.

The primary goal of the COUNSELING, CLINICAL & SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY Department is to prepare graduates for academic and research positions. A secondary goal is to prepare psychological service providers who will, in addition to providing direct service to their clientele, exercise influence on professional psychology through teaching, research, and leadership.

The optional Ph.D. bioengineering emphasis is open to all doctoral students currently enrolled at the University of California Santa Barbara in one of the 13 participating engineering and/or science departments and programs.

The Department of Mathematics takes seriously three aspects of mathematics within its graduate training: 1) Applied Mathematics: mathematicians help directly in the solution of problems which arise in other areas of human endeavor, 2) Mathematical Education: training others how to develop solutions on their own, and 3) Pure Mathematics: they expand the reach and clarify the understanding of mathematical thought itself.

Feminist Studies is an interdisciplinary discipline that produces innovative research and fosters effective and creative teaching. Our faculty focus on the ways that relations of gender-intersecting with race, class, ethnicity, sexuality, nation, ability, and other axes of difference-are embedded in social, political, and cultural formations.

Marine Science is a field which encompasses many traditional disciplines including biology, geology, chemistry, physics, and engineering.

In the Department of Education at the University of California Santa Barbara, we offer students the opportunity to learn and build knowledge about the needs of learners, the complex processes of teaching and learning, and the structures and policies of schools -- with a focus on the diversity of California, the nation, and the world. Our renowned faculty works in seven research areas to investigate important issues that shape learning environments, the needs of diverse learners, the development of disciplinary knowledge, and educational policies.

The Ph.D. program provides a wide variety of research and course opportunities from control theory to nanofabrications, device fabrication to image processing; communications to quantum mechanics; and optics to Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) design. Collaboration is possible between departments and research centers within and outside of the College of Engineering.
