The World Maritime University (WMU) was established by the UN’s International Maritime Organisation in 1983 and is IMO’s apex institution for postgraduate education and research in the maritime field.

The PhD program in Economics (240 ECTS) is a North American-style program with around 35 doctoral students. A specially designed course program, the Stockholm Doctoral Course Program in Economics, Econometrics and Finance (SDPE), is organized by SSE jointly with Stockholm University for the PhD students in Economics and Finance.

The PhD program in Finance (240 ECTS) follows the standard US format: rigorous coursework in the first two years, and independent work on research projects that will make up the doctoral dissertation in the remaining years. Teaching experience is an integral part of the PhD program in Finance, and doctoral students are strongly encouraged to do some teaching from the second year. 

The PhD program in Business Administration prepares our graduates to be successful researchers or to advance in their chosen careers. Our faculty members who are active in the area of business administration are excellent teachers who keep up-to-date on their disciplines through research and publication. The doctoral program fosters close interaction between students and faculty, and every doctoral student belongs to a research group specializing in a particular field of research.
