17 Software Engineering and Development PhD Degree Programs

The Ph.D. in Engineering Program offered by the Faculty of Engineering Sciences is designed to provide a fundamental approach to basic engineering principles with an emphasis on scientific methods. The aim of coursework and research projects is to develop individuals capable of creative work in engineering science and areas of specialization in engineering research and development or teaching.

The work for this degree consists of engineering research, the preparation of a thesis based on that research, and a program of advanced study in engineering, mathematics, and related physical sciences. The student’s work is directed by the department, subject to the general supervision of the School of Engineering.

The program addresses open topics in software system analysis, development, and application. In both theoretical and practical terms, it has foundations in the research of software architectures, programming languages, and notations, together with tools and methods for software analysis and construction. These are studied both in general terms and in the context of important software system classes such as information systems, or distributed or parallel systems. On the creative side, the program combines projects of basic and applied research, often with strong experimental aspects, with outputs including research prototypes alongside traditional publications. The program does not contain specializations.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is conferred by the School of Engineering primarily in recognition of competence in the subject field and the ability to investigate engineering problems independently, resulting in a new contribution to knowledge in the field. The work for the degree consists of engineering research, the preparation of a thesis based on that research, and a program of advanced studies in engineering, mathematics, and related physical sciences.
