The Humanities and Social Sciences doctoral programme is a joint programme for all of the social science and humanities subjects offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Arts, in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Work, the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, the Academy of Music, the Faculty of Theology, and the Academy of Fine Arts and Design. The programme emphasises the connection between study and research, cooperation among institutions, the European mobility of students and teachers, and the development of interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to study and research.

Sociologists examine the taken for granted “facts” of society, often exposing unsavoury and under-investigated parts of contemporary social life. NTU Sociology provides research training through full-time and part-time M.A. and Ph.D. by research, designed to give you the academic training needed to pursue your interests and produce rigorous social science.

Public Policy and Global Affairs (PPGA) offers full-time and part-time Ph.D. by research. It is a fast-growing research programme in Asia with a vibrant research community. Current faculty research interests include but are not limited to: Foreign Policy Analysis, Regionalism and Regional Integration (European Union, ASEAN), Chinese Foreign Policy, etc.

PhD by research via Distance Learning is awarded after successfully completing a theoretical research specialization. This research is presented in the form of a doctoral thesis. The PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is the only doctoral degree that can be achieved through distance learning. The main requirement for a PhD online through distance learning is to present and discuss a thesis of at least 100 pages for review and evaluation by an academic committee at Selinus University. Sociology is the systematic study of human society. This programme places special emphasis on understanding the fundamental concepts of sociology and key social structures such as family, religion, education, science and technology, and economic and political institutions. The notion of culture, personality and personality development, role and status, as well as social order, control, class and mobility should be presented and analysed in the research thesis. The programme should also address the theories and processes of socio-cultural change.

With our partner university, Liverpool John Moores University, Alef Trust offers a collaborative PhD in Applied Transpersonal Psychology. The collaborative basis of the PhD means that you will conduct your research under guidance from supervisors from both Alef Trust and LJMU. Given our expertise in the topic, the Alef Trust supervisor will lead in most academic aspects of the programme. Those accepted onto the programme will benefit from being registered with LJMU, giving you full access to LJMU’s Doctoral Academy.

It illustrates both the diversity of human societies and cultural models around the world and the similarities that make all human beings fundamentally similar. It also examines, from an anthropological point of view, the consequences of industrialism and globalization.

On the MPhil/PhD African Studies supervision is provided for research leading to MPhil and PhD degrees within the broad general area of African studies. Research topics such as the study of a language (from a descriptive, comparative, philological or textual point of view), of literature (whether author-based, thematic or comparative), or of any of the performing arts, which falls within our own core expertise, are supervised entirely in the African Languages, Cultures and Literatures Department. However, there is great potential for extending the range of topics by means of joint supervision with colleagues from other departments and centres.

The PhD in Development Studies by Research is IDS’s advanced research degree. It is awarded to candidates after a minimum of three years study, based on completion of original and significant research in the field of Development Studies – which is assessed through a written thesis.
