We all share the same processes that allow us to survive. This program explains biological concepts and offers a unified presentation of life and its variation through evolution.

NIE offers graduate studies by research leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in line with the increasing emphasis on research in the areas of Arts, Education and Sciences.

The MPhil-PhD Program in Computational Social Science is designed for students who wish to pursue an academic career in the broad area of computational social science and humanities. It will train students to identify interesting and promising research topics and conduct research projects by bridging the gap between computational techniques and traditional studies in humanities and social sciences.

The PhD programme in social science embraces disciplines like business, economics, marked, administration and resource management. It is also possible to conduct interdisciplinary projects. In order to become a PhD candidate, you have to apply for a research fellow position that is advertised and get employed, or be employed at an external institution that will fund the PhD study.

The PhD programme in natural sciences embraces disciplines like marine and terrestrial biology, ecology, biotechnology, genetics, physiology, immunology, food science, and resource biology and management, as well as fishery and aquaculture technology. The aim of PhD programme is to prepare researchers and lecturers, as well as professionals for applied research, economics or public administration, whose knowledge, skills and competencies meet the requirements that exist internationally, taking into account the needs of the Latvian labor market.

PhD in Experimental Research through Design, Art and Technologies The PhD in Experimental Research Through Design, Art and Technologies programme aims to train a new generation of researchers capable of embracing the opportunities offered by the convergence of design, art, social sciences, humanities and technology, integrating complex knowledge to address multiple global challenges from a post-disciplinary perspective.

The doctoral program in education is designed to prepare doctors in the field of social sciences, who are able to independently carry out research and experimental developmental work and to solve scientific problems. The aim of the program is to develop responsible, ethically active, creative researchers capable to develop competitively the high-quality research at national and international levels with the focus on the creation of new knowledge and knowing, and contributing to education as science and practice through adding the value to the sustainable development of society.

Students are expected and encouraged to develop innovative ways of thinking and to experiment and create in a range of media. This programme also acts as an incubator for the development and realization of original artistic and professional productions, including design, interactive media, film, animation and new art forms.

The programme offers students the opportunity to obtain an internationally recognized advanced degree based on substantial individual fundamental or applied research in one of three research clusters – media and communication, political science, sociology and social work.

The Faculty of Natural Science constantly endeavors to increase the number and quality of its students, to continually develop areas of study in order to keep pace with the demands of society and to maintain the excellence of its teaching. In addition, the Faculty encourages interaction with the community by attempting to strengthen its ties with industry and the national educational system.

The purpose of the program is to enable candidates to undertake research at the most advanced academic level culminating in the submission, assessment, and acceptance of a thesis. The candidate is required to demonstrate high-level research capability and make a significant and original academic contribution to the frontiers of art and/or design. In certain instances, creative work such as designed artifacts, public performances, public exhibitions, or other practice-based outputs may constitute the partial fulfillment of the research requirements.

The Graduate School’s support concept for doctoral students is modelled on the well-established structure developed in the doctoral programme ‘Manuscript Cultures’, which started with the SFB 950 ‘Manuscript Cultures in Asia, Africa and Europe’ in 2011.

The doctoral program focuses on identifying a common thematic area: understanding the processes that drive social and political change. In an increasingly complex and globalized world, understanding these processes, both innovative and persistent, necessarily requires the contribution of multiple disciplines.

Fisip UNAIR’s Doctoral Program in Social Sciences has several interests, namely Sociology, Anthropology, International Relations, Communication, State Administration, and Digital Society. Since 2019, the Doctoral program of Social Sciences FISIP UNAIR organizes a Program by Research that prioritizes research as the main activity and academic activities are carried out independently with a clear and connected external. Once the doctoral program participants are accepted, they will be given debriefing in the fields of methodology, theory, philosophy, methods of writing, and writing scientific information as a means for scientific publication.
