The Ph.D. program is a 4-year degree (sometimes extended to 5) in which students master a subfield of physics. The aim of the Ph.D. in Physics program is to produce graduates who are able to conduct independent research in Physical sciences at the highest levels of originality and quality. The degree will be awarded to students who demonstrate a range of advanced knowledge and skills at the forefront of Physics and who complete an independent investigation of a novel specialist topic in order to present a thesis addressing a problem in cutting-edge research.

The Ph.D. program in Physics in the School of Sciences and Humanities (SSH) at Nazarbayev University (NU) is designed to provide advanced skills and a knowledge base at an expert level for individuals planning a career in academia, industry, and research settings in Kazakhstan and abroad. The program focuses on the enhancement of knowledge by advanced courses and development of research skills at a high level.

The Division of Advanced Sciences gives students a deeper understanding of the specialized disciplines of mathematics, physics, chemistry/biochemistry, and computer science, and equips them with well-grounded scientific analysis and rational processing skills based on the basic sciences. Geophysics has to do with the physics of the earth and its surrounding atmosphere and applies the theory and method of physics, combined with geology, atmospheric science, marine science and astronomy, to detect all kinds of geophysical fields (such as the earth's magnetic field, electric field, gravity field and seismic wave field, temperature field, the interior of the earth radiation, atmosphere and plasma radiation field, high electromagnetic field, etc.) by means of modern science and technology. You will learn to use such geophysical fields to obtain useful information that is used during exploration, drilling and production of hydrocarbons.
