This program is one of two doctoral programs offered by the Faculty of Science, the other of which being the PhD in Environmental Sciences. This research-intensive PhD program brings together researchers from the faculty of science at UPEI to tackle the chemistry, physics, and biology of molecules big and small. The program involves graduate-level courses, a dissertation, candidacy examination and final oral defense while developing unique connections to the business aspects of the growing field.

The PhD in Materials Science program is jointly offered between Ontario Tech University and Trent University. Courses are taught by faculty from both institutions via traditional face-to-face instruction augmented by the collaborative implementation of lectures and research meetings at a distance. This will be accomplished using advanced videoconferencing technology (AccessGrid) made possible by the membership of both institutions in the Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computer Network (SHARCNET) high-performance computing consortium.

Mathematical modelling is an important tool in the study of physical and biological phenomena. The field of computational science combines the implementation of mathematical models, computer algorithms and knowledge in a particular area of application in order to provide an additional tool for the study of phenomena and, in particular, to facilitate the study of problems that are intractable or difficult to study using other approaches.

Infertility, pregnancy, cancer… The research topics covered in the doctoral program in biology concern a precious asset in living beings: health, whether human, animal, or environmental. What are the inflammatory properties of nanoparticles? How can chemical compounds in the environment interfere with the functioning of different systems in the human body? At the doctorate in biology, you could contribute in particular to the development of therapeutic or preventive agents, to understand the mechanisms of infection of various pathogens, or to fight against sports doping.
