The Doctoral Program in Medical Sciences focuses on advanced training in Medicine and Dental Medicine, fostering research in basic, translational, clinical, or population science. History of medicine is an interdisciplinary field concerned with the history of medical science, history of particular specialties and their representatives, history of the medical profession and development of medical thought, history of training of health professionals, history of public health and health care facilities, incidence and alterations of disease entities as well as their treatment. At medical schools of universities in the world, the history of medicine has had a century-lasting tradition. The Institute for History of Medicine and Foreign Languages (thereinafter “Institute”) of Charles University – the First Faculty of Medicine, one of the first in Europe, has been active at the oldest medical faculty in Czechia since 1920. Studies in this program enable graduates of faculties of medicine and natural science as well as of various humanitarian fields to achieve the highest specialized education in this discipline. The Institute, which is the only in this specialty, is the central coordinating institution for the education of Ph.D. students of the history of medicine for other university schools in Prague and nationwide. According to article 3, paragraph 1, second sentence of the Code of Admission Procedure of Charles University, this program of study is offered without specialization.

Biophysics, as an interdisciplinary field, offers doctoral (Ph.D.) study to university graduates of various specializations (medicine, natural sciences, mathematics, physics, etc.). The study program is carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

The doctoral study program "Preventive medicine and epidemiology" is using the principles of evidence-based medicine to assess the impact of various factors (physical, chemical, environmental, biological) on human health at the individual as well as the population level in order to identify possible approaches for prevention. The program integrates knowledge and approaches originating from the fields of toxicology, molecular biology, immunology including clinically-oriented disciplines. The program represents a theoretical basis for preventive disciplines in medicine, e.g. public health, epidemiology, and biostatistics.

The part-time doctoral program in medical science (Dr. scient. med.) promotes an understanding of the methods and competencies of scientific, interdisciplinary cooperation between clinical research and basic research, familiarises students with the methods and concepts of medical science and prepares them for work in predominantly clinical, but also natural science and/or health science-oriented research.
