20 Life Sciences PhD Degree Programs in South Africa

The PhD in Production Animal Studies is a research degree. An appropriate Masters degree is required for admission, and additional requirements may be stipulated by the Head of Department. Topics are defined by the student in conjunction with the supervisor and Head of Department.

This programme is coordinated in the Department of Plant and Soil Science. In addition to further theoretical studies as prescribed by the head(s) of the relevant department(s), the study will involve a doctoral research thesis under guidance of a supervisor selected by the head of the department. The supervisor will be a member of the Faculty staff.

Our research function occupies a unique position in Africa. We have the largest number of clinical specialists on the continent, including many European and American certified specialists. Among other things, we investigate small animal and equine infectious diseases that commonly occur in Africa, as well as relevant anatomy, diseases and clinical conditions in African wildlife.

PhD Specialising in Soil Science

This is an interdepartmental programme. The curriculum is to be determined by the heads of department in the biological sciences.

The Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences is home to more than 6 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Faculty presents degrees in fields ranging from the proverbial A to Z – from actuaries to zoologists, and consists of 13 departments.

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Zoology is to provide qualifying students with an in-depth understanding and integrated knowledge of advanced applicable theory in the field of zoology.

The degree is awarded based on a thesis and other requirements as follows: Candidates must write a thesis on their research project in Food Science and have at least a research paper accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Also consult General Academic Regulations G42-G55.

The Ph.D. in Biochemistry demands a very high level of intellectual, theoretical, and practical specialized scientific knowledge and insight into problems related to the field of study and the application of advanced experimental methods and techniques of the modern research, as well as fundamental scientific and academic values in generating, processing, interpreting and presenting research data orally and in written form.
