7 Law PhD Degree Programs

The PhD on Urban Development & Governance is a 4-year flexible trajectory programme that fuses urban management with governance.

The objective of the doctoral program of study “Theoretical Legal Sciences – Law and Legal Theory in European Context” focuses on scholarly creative and educational activities of specialists and academics showing their scholarly approach to solving theoretical and practical issues within a wide area of law and legal sciences. This unique study program is offered as interdisciplinary, i.e. it provides an opportunity to focus, in writing the dissertation, on any legal or scholarly topic, which has its roots in some traditional branch of law, but goes beyond the respective legal branch and may even exceed the law as such (e.g. Law and Economics, Law and Politics, etc.). An emphasis is laid on interaction and consultation with a respective supervisor. The basic aim of the study is to write a quality dissertation thesis where the student, using the relevant methodology, solves theoretical issues of jurisprudence and/or practical issues of the law as a normative order. Knowledge, abilities, and skills are evaluated during the relevant forms of assessment of the study and through the dissertation, which must be published as a whole or in part.

The purpose of doctoral studies in the field of Practical and Ecumenical Theology and Theological Ethics is for students to cultivate, in the usual way for advanced studies, their ability to think theologically and to deepen their knowledge of the theological tradition in its ecumenical, practical, and ethical dimensions on an expert level. Students learn to critically analyze and reflect on the knowledge acquired and methods used in their field and to interpret them both in their own specific contexts and in the interdisciplinary settings of contemporary scholarly knowledge. Depending on the subject of their dissertation project, their studies are focused on the relevant specialization in the field of ecumenical or practical theology (for example, homiletics, catechetics, poimenics, practical ecclesiology, hymnology, or missiology), or on theological ethics or Christian social work (diaconia). At the same time, however, they retain the appropriate breadth of vision and interdisciplinary orientation that pertains to all branches of theology.

There are numerous ethical issues in every field of human activity. The aim of this programme is to critically reflect on these issues, whilst applying ethics as a philosophical discipline. Students of Applied Ethics will acquire skills in analytical thinking and qualitative research methods. They will be able to hierarchically organize, evaluate and propose solutions to dilemmas or situations requiring ethical insight in their profession, using the theoretical and practical knowledge obtained during this programme.

The Public and Social Policy (PSP) doctoral study program prepares students for basic and applied research and teaching in academia as well as other types of activities requiring a high level of theoretical and methodological education in PSP. This program is open to all master's degree graduates or equivalent.

PhD in Law and Digital Technologies is an interdisciplinary doctoral study programme (full-time or combined) focused on the complex interactions between law and digital technologies. The programme is implemented by the Faculty of Law in cooperation with the Faculty of Science, Department of Informatics.

The PhD in Criminology and Social Justice combines disciplinary and specialized study in Criminology, study in qualitative research methods and statistics, and applied learning experiences to prepare students to work in a variety of settings.
