Learn more about Languages and Linguistics PhD degree programs
You'll spend your doctoral years doing what linguists do at the highest level, examining language as a system, a social force, and a cognitive phenomenon. A PhD in Languages and Linguistics positions you at the research frontier, producing original scholarship that advances the field.
The doctoral environment fosters independent inquiry and a rigorous commitment to theoretical precision. Your coursework will move well beyond foundational grammar or language acquisition into areas like phonological theory, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, or sociolinguistic variation. You'll design and run your own empirical studies, applying quantitative and qualitative research methods to questions that haven't been answered yet.
Much of your program centers on the dissertation, an extended original contribution that demonstrates your command of the discipline. You might analyze endangered language documentation, model syntactic structures across language families, or investigate the relationship between language and identity in multilingual communities. Graduates move into academic roles as researchers and lecturers, but also find careers in computational linguistics, language policy, forensic linguistics, and applied research within government or international organizations. The scope of the field is broader than most people expect.
