9 Language Studies PhD Degree Programs

The PhD programme offers interdisciplinary and research-based studies, integrating linguistics, literary studies, folklore and theatre studies. Although the main task of the programme is the preservation and enhancement of national culture and science by preparing highly qualified researchers and specialists for researching the Latvian language, literature, folklore, theatre history and theory, the programme is also designed for aspiring specialists in other languages and cultures to enable postgraduate students to build their teaching and research careers at higher educational institutions and elsewhere.

Graduates have a sound grounding in research methods in the humanities, particularly in the study of relationships between languages/cultures; knowledge of information sources and the ability to assess their relevance to the pair of languages/cultures of their choice; a thorough grounding in the theoretical concepts of translation and interpreting and the ability to apply them to the analysis of the translation / interpreting market and procedures. They are equipped to produce and edit extensive scientific texts and to evaluate the quality of writings in translation and interpreting studies. They are capable of theoretical reflection on particular products/situations related to translation studies within their linguistic, cultural, historical and social contexts, and are able to present their findings to the academic communities.

We expect applicants, who would like to do research concerning the multilingual person and multilingual communities, as well as language teachers, who would contribute to the renewal of language teaching and language learning and making these more effective by academic research.

The 3rd cycle of studies leading to the PhD in Language Sciences has as main objective the reinforcement of the production capacity and internationalization of knowledge through the carrying out of original research, in a fundamental or applied perspective, and aims at providing candidates with competencies which enable them to develop original and independent research and the ability to transmit it.

The Ph.D. Program in English offers a large number of seminars each semester in both established and emerging fields of study. The diversity of the CUNY-wide doctoral consortium allows for a wide range of expertise amongst faculty members in the English program. The program, which enrolls approximately 20 new students each year, also provides opportunities for professional development, including workshops, seminars, mock interviews, and lectures; and has set forth Professional Development and Ethics Learning Goals.
