The aim of doctoral studies in Informatics is to educate scientists capable to develop and creatively apply the methods of information technology for creation and analysis of the mathematical models of real-world objects and systems aiming to find solutions to important scientific and practical problems.

The Doctor of Information Systems (D.Sc) objective is to prepare students for research or teaching positions in the academic community so that they can conduct or contribute to research in their chosen areas of study.

The study in PhD in Systems Engineering and Informatics consists of the study part ending with the final state exam and the research part focuses on the dissertation thesis and its defence. The credit system is applied for the evaluation of the study. This system is in line with the European ECTS system, allowing for the exchange of mobilities of students between universities in Europe.

The number of articles that have to be submitted to an accredited journal(s) on submission of a doctoral thesis should be a minimum of two. Departments may, however, require a higher number, as specified in their postgraduate brochures or departmental websites. At the latest, just before the department submits the final result of a thesis to the Dean, a student should submit proof of submission of articles issued by an accredited journal(s), to the head of the relevant department, for his/her recommendation to the Dean. The submitted articles should be based on the research that the student has conducted for the thesis and should have been approved by the supervisor. The affiliations of both the student and supervisor should be listed as the University of Pretoria.

In addition, they get the opportunity to collaborate with faculty on numerous publications in top academic journals. The research students in the PhD programme are exposed to classroom teaching opportunities to prepare them for an academic career.

The research thesis of this PhD programme should provide a basis for understanding, implementation and rational decision making on contemporary networking technologies. Analyze contemporary terminology, concepts, technologies and devices used in the Internet industry. It should develop both intentional and accidental threats and threats to computer mainframe systems and networks. It should also show how to detect and prevent these threats and how to minimise potential losses caused by fraud and/or human error.
