The purpose of the Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering is to develop an engineer with advanced abilities in applying fundamental engineering sciences and/or design and synthesis, and related principles independently to specific problems of society at large.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) program prepares students for successful careers as teachers, researchers, and leaders in academia, industry, and the public sector. The program emphasizes the systems engineering, collaboration, and engagement skills critical to addressing the complex societal problems of tomorrow. ISE graduate students tackle these problems in a supportive environment working with nationally-recognized faculty.

The Doctoral Program in Industrial Engineering and Management (DPMIEM) is directed to holders of a master’s degree, second cycle or equivalent, or those who have a scientific or professional curriculum recognized as relevant and appropriate, with a strong background in areas related to Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) or other related areas. It intends to provide the knowledge, approaches and the maturity necessary for the production of scientific contributions relevant to the area of MIE, involving the analysis, design and control of integrated systems that support people, material flows and data / information in business processes 'intra' and 'inter' organizations. The curricular component courses aim to provide a set of skills related to the main techniques and tools of IEM. With the elaboration of the thesis the intention is to promote the development of an original work that could contribute to the research projects in the proposed field.

The PhD programme (according to the Italian Dottorato di Ricerca) is a postgraduate academic qualification. It represents the implementation of the 3rd cycle of education and training to research in the Italian academic system and provides the abilities and competencies required for carrying out highly-qualified research in universities, public institutions and private companies.
