University of Lodz Doctoral School of Humanities provides support and guidance to those seeking a PhD in Humanities that prepare dissertations in the following disciplines: Archaeology, History, Philosophy, Linguistics, Literary studies, Cultural and religious studies, Art Studies, Ethnology, and cultural anthropology (since the academic year 2024/2025).

The PhD program in the humanities and social sciences offers a research programme that qualifies candidates for work in academia or other areas in which there is a strong demand for scientific insight and analytical thinking. The research programme is offered in a range of subjects and has different areas of specialisation.

Digital Humanities is an interdisciplinary subject area that brings a range of computational, quantitative, and other innovative and collaborative methods to the study of texts, images, histories, languages, and cultures, while also being critical of methodology, disciplinarity, and pedagogy.

The Humanities and Social Sciences doctoral programme is a joint programme for all of the social science and humanities subjects offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Arts, in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Work, the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, the Academy of Music, the Faculty of Theology, and the Academy of Fine Arts and Design. The programme emphasises the connection between study and research, cooperation among institutions, the European mobility of students and teachers, and the development of interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to study and research.

PhD in research via Distance Learning is awarded after successfully completing a theoretical research specialization. This research is presented in the form of a doctoral thesis. The PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is the only doctoral degree that can be achieved through distance learning. The main requirement for a PhD online through distance learning is to present and discuss a thesis of at least 100 pages for review and evaluation by an academic committee at Selinus University. The Graduate School’s support concept for doctoral students is modelled on the well-established structure developed in the doctoral programme ‘Manuscript Cultures’, which started with the SFB 950 ‘Manuscript Cultures in Asia, Africa and Europe’ in 2011.

The doctoral program in Digital Studies, funded by swiss universities for the period 2017-2020, was created at the University of Lausanne in January 2017. From its first year of existence, this program brought together more than sixty doctoral students interested in digital studies. The doctoral program in Digital Studies offers doctoral students from the universities of Lausanne, Geneva, Friborg, Neuchâtel, Basel, Bern, and EPFL a space for reflection and sharing around the challenges of digital cultures, societies, and humanities. Designed as an extension of the Interfaculty Master in Digital Humanities at UNIL, this doctoral program is resolutely interdisciplinary, offering to develop a transversal perspective on the challenges of digitization in the context of the human and social sciences.
