The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) is a high-caliber, research-only degree designed to forge the next generation of global health authorities, medical innovators, and epidemiological strategists.

The PhD programme in Health Sciences is a structured research education and consists of independent research work with a doctoral thesis (150 credits) and a training component (30 credits). The programme is standardized to a three-year duration, extended to four years for mandatory duties. Part-time study is possible, with a requirement that at least 50% of the working hours will be dedicated to the PhD programme.

Public Health is an interdisciplinary field encompassing public health practice in the community and scientific research using theoretical perspectives from disciplines such as anthropology, economics, geography, gerontology, medicine, nursing, psychology and sociology.

The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design is the global leader of inclusive design, with a focus on age, health and (dis)ability. The Ageing, Health & Inclusive Design MPhil/PhD programme focuses on the creative and systematic inquiry of issues relating to ageing, health, and/or inclusive design.

Our mission is to provide support to our students in their research field assisting them with their scientific work, publishing novel results, international dissemination, and getting acquainted with the most recent protocols and methods. The school motivates PhD in Health Sciences to take part in national and international project applications. Through our international contacts we give our Ph.D. students the opportunity for mobility and to gain experience abroad and to expand their scientific contacts. The Ph.D. students are involved in the scientific research of the supervisors and scientific members of the Doctoral School. The research topics are continuously being expanded due to the new results achieved by the Ph.D. students. These novel results will be integrated into the research topics.

The Department of Health Sciences (DSS) of the University of Florence places the promotion of health and psychophysical well-being at the core of its mission, directing departmental teaching, research, and third mission activities toward the development of innovative knowledge and skills to address the preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, bioethical, and biomedical-legal challenges associated with protecting personal and public health.

The TEAM Ph.D. is a true crossroad at Sant'Anna, being participated by all Institu- tes (Biorobotics, DIRPOLIS, Life Sciences, Management, Economics, Mechanical Intelligence, TECIP) testifying to the global effort of the Institution. The PhD program in Vision Sciences is an interuniversity and interdisciplinary program, with a vocation for international collaboration and a high commitment to the modern research training that is expected in the biomedical field.

The study program investigates the mechanisms of interaction of chemical, physical and biological factors of the living and the working environments of the organism. It integrates methodological approaches especially in the area of toxicology, molecular biology, and immunology. It is the theoretical basis for preventive medicine fields, ie. hygiene, and epidemiology.

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying students with the ability to: Perform independent original and creative scientific research; Contribute significant knowledge to and insight into optometry as well as the specific discipline of research; Display skills in related research methodologies and in proper formulation through a doctoral dissertation; Reflect upon decision-making, self-directedness, and contributions to optometric science; Only a Research Doctorate can be done.

This doctoral program offers a space for advanced training in the field of studies on demographic aging and longevity through the scientific perspective of the Social Sciences. In this sense, it is configured as a cycle of studies that aggregates different disciplinary areas, seeking to capitalize on their similarities, but also their differences, in an approach focused on complementarities, which are assumed to be fundamental for understanding a multidimensional phenomenon such as demographic aging and longevity.

The Doctoral Program in Gerontology and Geriatrics (UP/UA) specializes in training professionals for direct intervention, policy-making, service planning, and research with aging populations. The program focuses on analyzing aging and longevity, acquiring research skills, addressing health, psychological, and social needs, and conducting original research to advance knowledge in the field.

Medical imaging is an area of research that bridges the gap between basic and clinical science. It serves the common goal of developing and evaluating novel techniques for the image-based assessment and image-guided treatment of a wide spectrum of diseases.
