The purpose of the Ph.D. (Health Sciences) is to promote the career advancement of students in the area of Health Sciences by enabling students to conduct independent, novel research within a specific discipline or in a multidisciplinary manner in Health Sciences that will contribute to the knowledge and practice in the area of Health Sciences.

The purpose of the Doctor of Health Sciences in Complementary Medicine is to provide the qualifying student with advanced analytical problem-solving and reflective competencies in the field of complementary medicine (CM) and to enable them to act as a leader within the CM research field. This will be achieved by making an original contribution to the knowledge content of CM through independent research.

The degree is awarded based on a thesis and other requirements as follows: Candidates must write a thesis on their research project in Food Science and have at least a research paper accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Also consult General Academic Regulations G42-G55.

The Ph.D. in Psychology curriculum offers coursework in Psychology drawing on spiritual traditions, somatic practices, creative arts, mythology, indigenous wisdom, literary and poetic imagination, deep ecology, mystical philosophy, cultural history, and social critique. The Ph.D. program emphasize research, clinical, and cultural praxis skills as well as acquiring the knowledge base of psychology as a profession. The research coursework prepares students for the completion of an original research dissertation. The Ph.D. in Psychology is designed to meet the educational requirements for the state of California Psychologist license. The Ph.D. in Psychology also meets the educational requirements for the state of California MFT license (Board of Behavioral Sciences, Senate Bill 33, Section 4980.36, Business and Professions Code), and the state of California Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), (Senate Bill 788, Section 4999.33, Business and Professions Code), provided that fieldwork is done in accordance with BBS requirements.

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying students with the ability to: Perform independent original and creative scientific research; Contribute significant knowledge to and insight into optometry as well as the specific discipline of research; Display skills in related research methodologies and in proper formulation through a doctoral dissertation; Reflect upon decision-making, self-directedness, and contributions to optometric science; Only a Research Doctorate can be done.

A doctoral degree is a postgraduate qualification of at least 360 credits at NQF Level 10 and must demonstrate a high level of research capability and it must make a significant and original academic contribution at the knowledge frontiers of a discipline or field. The work must be of a quality to satisfy peer review consideration and merit publication. It requires a candidate to undertake research at the most advanced academic levels, requiring a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual and research independence, culminating in the submission, assessment and acceptance of a thesis; as well as the submission of proof of acceptance of a first-author research article for publication issued by an accredited journal. The project should be sufficient to generate at least three research articles.

The PsyD in Clinical Psychology curriculum offers innovative coursework in Psychology to prepare students for professional practice, including core, clinical, and research courses. The core curriculum provides a foundation for the clinical and research courses, supporting the student’s evolving relationship to clinical engagement.

The Doctor of Psychology (Ph.D., DPsy) goal is to prepare students for the general practice of professional clinical psychology including education and training regarding the broader social and systemic factors that contribute to human dysfunction such as poverty, oppression, and marginalization. The program will help students develop evaluation techniques and assessment, psychological foundations, remediation and intervention procedures, and program evaluation and research.
