Learn more about Geography and Geospatial Technology PhD degree programs
You'll spend your doctoral years doing what geographers and geospatial scientists do at the highest level: producing original research that advances how we understand space, place, and the human and physical processes that shape them. A PhD in Geography and Geospatial Technology goes well beyond foundational mapping or regional analysis.
The research environment fosters intellectual independence and sustained inquiry across a range of methodological traditions. Your coursework and independent study draw on remote sensing analysis, spatial data modeling, geographic information systems, and quantitative as well as qualitative field methods. Depending on your focus, you may examine climate and land-use change, urban systems, environmental justice, or population and migration patterns, applying geospatial methods at scales from local to global.
The dissertation is central to this degree. You'll design and execute a multi-year project, often in collaboration with research institutes, government agencies, or environmental organizations. Graduates move into faculty positions, senior research roles, and policy or planning careers, contributing to sectors including environmental science, urban development, public health geography, and international development. The analytical competencies you develop transfer across a wide range of research contexts.
