The Doctorate of Environmental Science (BS) program helps students develop practical skills and knowledge required to critically evaluate environmental problems and issues, and provide applied solutions.

The Ph.D. in agricultural and environmental sciences program at N.C. A&T teaches students about the complexities of our global food system and how to adapt to emerging challenges around food, energy, and water. This program prepares individuals for successful careers as researchers, faculty, and entrepreneurs and to be active and effective leaders in academia and the agriculture industry in both the public and private sectors. The interdisciplinary Environmental and Conservation Sciences program at North Dakota State University offers three tracks: Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, and Environmental Social Sciences.

In Marine Environmental Biology, the Ph.D. program studies marine organisms, their interactions in complex marine ecosystems, and the emergent properties of the communities that result from these interactions. By design and necessity, this work includes studies at all levels of biological organization, as well as investigations of the intersection between the activities of organisms and the abiotic world.

Graduates will apply scientific methods to understand and solve environmental challenges to human health; as well as methods to improve environmental sustainability and environmental justice.

The degree provides students with the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to conduct independent research in environmental and earth sciences. Students conduct dissertation research under the supervision of a faculty member in one of the participating departments (Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Civil and Environmental Engineering, or Urban and Public Affairs). The Doctor of Arts is a terminal degree designed to equip students with advanced ecological knowledge, psychological capacities, and communication skills necessary to effect change in human narratives and their resulting practices toward each other and the planet.

The Ph.D. degree in Biological Sciences—Ecology and Evolutionary Biology provides opportunities to study in areas such as animal behavior, entomology, limnology, microbial ecology, ornithology, systems ecology, systematic and evolutionary biology, environmental physiology, vertebrate ecology and population and community ecology. Although courses of study are tailored to students’ interests and needs, the program for all students normally includes training in population, community, ecosystems and evolutionary ecology and statistical theory. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of ecology, students are encouraged to take courses in geology, mathematics, chemistry and other disciplines.
