The Doctoral Program in Chemical and Environmental Engineering was the first of those offered by the USC in the area of technical teachings, it obtained the Quality Mention from the first call of the Ministry in the 2003/04 academic year, maintaining it uninterruptedly throughout all the courses in which it was in force, also obtaining the new label of Mention of Excellence since the 2011/12 academic year, the year in which this new measure of quality of doctoral programs was implemented.

Our mission is to provide a state of the art and multidisciplinary learning environment at the undergraduate and the graduate level. We offer a variety of degrees, including B.S., Minor, M.S., M.Eng., and Ph.D. degrees, and we conduct cutting edge research in three core areas: Air Pollution and Atmospheric Processes; Contaminant Fate and Resource Recovery and Hydrogeosciences and Water Resources Management.

The aim of the doctoral programmes of the CEE Department is to promote scholarly research leading to discovery, learning and innovation according to international standards of excellence, in the broader discipline of CEE, as well as in related multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields.

The Civil and Environmental Engineering PhD (CENE PhD) degree program provides opportunities for students to gain expertise in a broad range of research areas that support state initiatives, closely tie to campus research thrusts, and align with federal funding sources such as NSF, DoE, DoD, USDA and NASA. Doctoral students work with faculty advisors mentors to develop personalized programs of study and make significant contributions to the Civil and Environmental Engineering body of knowledge through their research. The graduates of the doctoral study program in PhD in Chemical and Environmental Engineering have an extraordinary forward-looking self-assertion, which results from the wide applicability of the acquired knowledge with a wide range of scope. Graduates of the doctoral study in Chemical and Environmental Engineering can independently formulate a scientific problem, propose a hypothesis to solve the problem and perform experimental or theoretical attempts to confirm it.

PhD programme in Environment Engineering is designed to enable students become first-rate interdisciplinary researchers and acquire the knowledge and skills to succeed in both academic and non-academic career. Students of this programme have a possibility to acquire a double PhD degree, because of the contract with the University of Bologna (Italy).

The Doctoral Program in Environmental Science and Engineering at the UA aims to produce highly trained professionals who are qualified to carry out autonomous research in the field of Environmental Science and Engineering, and thus respond to the recruitment needs of the academic and business sectors and public institutions.

In this research programme, students should implement updates of all aspects of environmental engineering including tools, techniques and regulations. Air quality control, water sanitation and its distribution, water treatment, waste pollutants sources and effects should also be covered. Candidates may draw attention to solid waste collection and transfer operations, hazardous waste remediation and assessment of environmental impacts.

The aim of the doctoral study program "Thermal Engineering and Fuels in Industry" is the scientific education of professionals who can creatively solve scientific research problems in the field of thermal engineering, energy, fuel chemistry, and ceramic materials, especially for high temperatures and material and energy utilization of waste.

Relevant master's degree

The doctoral programme in English Literature and Comparative Cultural Studies is designed for students who wish to undertake research in Anglophone or comparative literature, with particular emphasis on theoretical, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary perspectives.

The program allows graduates, through research, to specialize in the areas of analysis and design in specialized aspects of Structural Engineering, Environmental, Transportation and Water & Waste Water Engineering.
