Work leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is designed to give the candidate a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of his or her professional field and training in methods of research. The final basis for granting the degree shall be the candidate’s grasp of the subject matter of a broad field of study and a demonstrated ability to do independent research.

The Ph.D. in Engineering Program offered by the Faculty of Engineering Sciences is designed to provide a fundamental approach to basic engineering principles with an emphasis on scientific methods. The aim of coursework and research projects is to develop individuals capable of creative work in engineering science and areas of specialization in engineering research and development or teaching.

The Optics and Photonics PhD program provides the highest-quality education in optical science and engineering, allowing students to conduct scholarly, fundamental, and applied research, while aiding in the development of Florida’s and the nation’s technology-based industries.

The primary aim of our doctoral school is to train scientists who can continue their creative scientific work related to leading fields of chemical engineering and material sciences after finishing their PhD studies. The doctoral school was established on January 1, 2001 as the highest level of chemical engineering education at University of Pannonia. Since then, more than 100 students have earned the PhD degree in our doctoral school.

The PhD program in electrical engineering prepares students for a career in academia or research-focused careers in electrical engineering that support research commercialization prospects, drive innovation, and increase entrepreneurial opportunities.

PhD in Engineering Education. While there has been extraordinary engineering education happening at UConn since 1916, the field of engineering education is its academic study. A Ph.D. in engineering education from UConn will prepare students with the skills and competencies needed to conduct high-quality educational research in the context of engineering programs at both the pre-and post-secondary levels.

PhD in Civil Engineering Doctoral study is based on research in civil engineering. Students are working in one of the areas: concrete and concrete structures, steel structures, reliability and durability of structures, transport structures building environment, and urban planning.

PhD programme in Environment Engineering is designed to enable students become first-rate interdisciplinary researchers and acquire the knowledge and skills to succeed in both academic and non-academic career. Students of this programme have a possibility to acquire a double PhD degree, because of the contract with the University of Bologna (Italy).

The Civil and Environmental Engineering PhD (CENE PhD) degree program provides opportunities for students to gain expertise in a broad range of research areas that support state initiatives, closely tie to campus research thrusts, and align with federal funding sources such as NSF, DoE, DoD, USDA and NASA. Doctoral students work with faculty advisors mentors to develop personalized programs of study and make significant contributions to the Civil and Environmental Engineering body of knowledge through their research. The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering offers the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme by research on a full-time or part-time basis.

Students must elect to pursue a specialization in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Mining Engineering. Those interested in paleontology at the PhD level enroll in the Geology Specialization. Each specialization has different background and program requirements. The available coursework and current faculty expertise support the following areas of concentration.

Our department's research environment is vibrant and growing, and holds more promise with the recently-formed PhD program in chemical and biological engineering. This program is different from the majority of chemical and biological/biomolecular engineering (i.e., CBE) departments across the country. Generally, CBE departments require PhD students to take the core chemical engineering graduate courses for their degree, and provide elective courses in biology, microbiology, biotechnology, etc., to supplement the training of students focusing on biological-related dissertations. In our program, students are required to take both chemical engineering and biology/biological engineering graduate courses to fulfill their degree requirement. At a minimum, students will take two courses from the following biological engineering topics: biochemical engineering, industrial microbiology and biotechnology, metabolic engineering, biocatalysis, bioseparations, and molecular biology. This structure ensures that graduates have the foundation and skill set to be proficient as both a chemical and biological engineers.

The objective of Mechanical Engineering doctoral studies is to prepare future leaders in mechanical engineering capable of practical design and creative application of computational methods for the development and research of mathematical models of real-world objects and systems.

The aim of doctoral studies in Materials Engineering is to prepare the best-qualified specialists – scientists, who are able to individually conduct the works of scientific research and experimental development, and contribute to solving relevant scientific problems of material engineering.

The objective of the proposed PhD programme Industrial Engineering is to prepare university-educated top specialists in research, development and applications in quality management, experiment design, forecasting, implementation of Industry 4.0 (the Fourth Industrial Revolution) principles and comprehensive statistical data analysis, particularly in industrial applications dealing with fibre structures.

The primary task of the Doctoral School is to provide educational programs in PhD in Architectural Engineering of a high standard in accordance with the requirements of the Bologna system to those leading architects with an MSc or MA degree, as well as to those with an MA or MSc degree in an architecture-related field.
