The School of Engineering is devoted to pushing the frontiers of research in applied sciences and to developing new technologies that can advance human wellbeing and environmental sustainability. The School of Engineering’s Ph.D. in Electronic Science and Technology program trains doctoral students in cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and technology and actively recruits top talent from around the world.

Micro- and nano-electronics is considered an essential technology, as it enables the development and growth of our society. It is explicitly mentioned in the most relevant strategic planning documents of Italy and Europe (eg: PNRR 21-26, European Commission, of which it is one of the Key Enabling Technologies, and the European Chips Act). Today, any technological development, in any sector, from telecommunications to biomedical, from mobility and transportation to energy, requires dedicated micro- and nano-electronic devices, which must be specifically developed and manufactured on large scale. The problem at an international level, identified with the term "chip shortage", which has clearly emerged in recent years, demonstrates how the world economy is increasingly bound to the availability of integrated circuits and systems.

Electrical and electronic engineering is one of the widest research fields. There are no sectors in industry or science that could develop without innovative electronic solutions. Investigations during doctoral studies are carried out in the fields, such as ultrasonic measurements and diagnostics in aviation, energy generation and supply systems, and other industrial sectors, applications of electronic solutions in biomedicine, monitoring and control systems for various economic and transportation facilities, including signal processing and imaging.

The purpose of the qualification is to develop an engineer with advanced abilities in applying fundamental engineering sciences and/design and synthesis, and related principles independently to specific problems of society at large.

The aim of thePh.D. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering program with academicians who can conduct scientific and technological research and development activities on a universal scale in Electrical and Electronics Engineering is to educate researchers and innovative graduates who will be capable of using existing and emerging technologies to take an effective part in overcoming complex problems in development processes of new products, designs, production methodologies, and services.

We aim to equip capable individuals with expertise in Control and IC, Power and Information, and Biomedical Electronics.

Microelectronics is a cornerstone of the Information Age. It is concerned with studies in integrated electronic/photonic circuits, system architectures, and design automation. It integrates novel electronic and photonic devices into circuits; architects computing, networking, and sensing systems; and automates their design and optimization.

A joint postgraduate program in Nanoscience and Technology, initiated by the Schools of Science and Engineering, can offer long-term support to our ongoing research and training as well as to the development of technology and to commercialization efforts. The Doctoral Program (Ph.D.) in Electrical and Computer Engineering (or Electrical and Computer Engineering, EEC) is a research oriented program (research). Its purpose is to advance knowledge in the areas of Electrical and Computer Engineering and to equip students with exceptional ability to undertake advanced studies and original research.

All students of this program have to participate in original research. Most students enter the program with an undergraduate background in electrical/electronics engineering, telecommunication, computer engineering, physics, or a related discipline.

The Ph.D. degree caters to those wishing to pursue a career in advanced industrial research and development or university research and teaching. It emphasizes training in original thinking and independent research. Students must successfully complete coursework and a thesis of significant original research.

This concentration is intended for research postgraduate students who are interested in pursuing research in computation related research. Students can enroll in a particular discipline for research with a special focus on Scientific Computation.
