10 Economic PhD Degree Programs in Portugal

The Ph.D. Programme in Economics is a four-year, full-time programme. The first three semesters are devoted to coursework; the remaining semesters are devoted to the preparation of the Ph.D. dissertation.

International Ph.D. in Economics. Université Côte d'Azur (UniCA) international Ph.D. in economics offers training in traditional economic disciplines - like microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, financial market analysis, industrial organization - and training in disciplines embedding a complexity-based perspective such as computational economics, experimental economics, the analysis of financial and economic networks.

The Ph.D. Economic and Social History was established by the Technical University of Lisbon in 1991 and adapted to the European Higher Education Area in 2009. This 3rd cycle course aims to teach and produce original research in the eld of Economic History.

The recently created Doctoral Program in Business and Economics of the University of Aveiro, with three branches of specialization - Economics, Management and Finance - responds to the requests of researchers and graduates to continue their doctoral studies in these areas of knowledge, tackling a gap that exists not only in the context of the doctoral programs of the University of Aveiro, but also, due to its differential nature, in the context of the education Programs in these areas in Portugal.

The PhD is a four-year program consisting of one and a half year of coursework followed by two and a half years of research. In the first year of the program, the focus is on providing the foundations for successful research. In the first semester of the second year students choose three additional courses in field subjects (or extra courses in the core subjects), which should be closely related to their research interests. In the second semester of the second year and in the third and fourth years, students are expected to develop their research projects and write a dissertation under the supervision of a faculty member.

The Ph.D. in Economics aims to provide an education that prepares Ph.D. graduates for professional work that demands a higher degree of technical and scientific expertise, preparing them for international careers in Economics.

The Ph.D. Program in Applied Mathematics for Economics and Management is designed to meet the needs of those who wish to enhance their knowledge of mathematical methods and techniques in order to make original contributions in a particular field or to develop and implement solutions for problems in the areas of Economics and Management.
