Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting and Finance: The PhD is a programme of independent, self-directed academic research degree, supported by a team of supervisors that makes an original contribution to knowledge written up in a publishable dissertation. The PhD programme also supports developing research and generic skills to equip you to operate successfully as a professional researcher in any setting. The essential requirement of a PhD is the creation of new knowledge. Being a researcher means developing new ideas and improving understanding by creating new knowledge.

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Auditing is to develop applied specialized competencies in the mastering, interpretation, understanding, analysis, and application of auditing principles in the auditing field.

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Econometrics is to develop advanced competencies in the mastering, interpretation, understanding, analysis, and application of econometric techniques.

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Taxation is to develop applied specialized competencies in the mastering, interpretation, understanding, analysis, and application of taxation principles in the financial and commercial sector. A qualifying candidate should show evidence of original and independent scientific work.

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Accounting is to develop applied specialized competencies in the mastering, interpretation, understanding, analysis, and application of accounting principles in the financial accounting field. A qualifying candidate should show evidence of original and independent scientific work.

The Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences is home to more than 6 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Faculty presents degrees in fields ranging from the proverbial A to Z – from actuaries to zoologists, and consists of 13 departments.

The Program consists of a thesis. Additional modules (as approved by the postgraduate coordinator) may be required depending on the candidate's background and the scope of the study. The purpose of the Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics is to provide qualifying students with an in-depth understanding and integrated knowledge of advanced applicable theory in the field of mathematical statistics.

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Transport Economics is to develop intellectual and specialized competencies and practical skills in the acquisition, interpretation, understanding, analysis, and application of transport economics, management, and regulatory principles.

The Dean has authorisation regarding matters not provided for in the General Academic Regulations or Faculty Regulations. The Dean may also, during any academic year and at the recommendation of the Postgraduate Committee, cancel the registration of any student whose academic progress is not satisfactory.

This programme consists of a thesis.

PhD Thesis Research in Statistics

The Doctor of Economics degree unites economic analysis with the practical aspects of business. The program is intended to prepare students for careers in research and teaching in business administration and similar fields of economics. The program research represents theories and research methods used by a variety of academic disciplines such as technology and operations management, corporate governance and control, labor, relations, capital markets and financial institutions, corporate finance, organizations and markets, international business, business strategy, and industrial organization marketing.

The curriculum consists of a thesis that incorporates a research proposal, an oral defence (viva voce) and two manuscripts, based on the candidate's research, submitted for publication to a recognised accredited journal. Proof of the submission of the manuscripts is a compulsory condition for the degree to be conferred.
