This program was created with the purpose of responding to a series of training, scientific and research needs that are found in the Galician University System (SUG). The Doctoral Program promotes studies at the postgraduate level and promotes research training for students in the field of Health Sciences and specifically in the field of Dentistry.

This programme is designed to unify the basic and clinical sciences, as it is believed that scientific and professional development cannot be separated but should proceed concurrently throughout the programme.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest degree offered by the University of Otago. It is awarded on the submission of a thesis which must meet rigorous standards. It requires highly developed academic ability, independence and perseverance. Most students take between 3-4 years of full-time study to complete their PhD.

The dental study program consists of the following topics: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthetics, Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics, Periodontology and Oral Medicine, Pediatric Dentistry, and Orthodontics. The aim of the postgraduate study of Stomatology is to extend, deepen the knowledge of doctoral students not only in the basic Stomatology field but also in related fields (borderline) and, on that basis, independent scientific work. The main part of the study is solving a specific research task in the field of stomatology, which is in accordance with the research focus of the department. The results of the solution of the given topic are processed by the doctoral student in his / her dissertation. At the same time, it continuously presents them both in the form of a professional article in the relevant periodical and in the form of oral communication at domestic or foreign professional meetings. One indicator of a nation's progress is the number and quality of human resources with doctoral degrees. The number of Doctors needs to be increased, at least 20 percent of the total university lecturers. In this context, it is hoped that apart from accelerating the fulfillment of human resource needs with doctoral qualifications, it is also a program to generate new findings to strengthen national innovation and the nation's competitiveness. This training includes the advanced study of cell and molecular mechanisms, experimental studies, and clinical studies of development, growth, aging, function, disease, and treatment. Work leading to the degree of doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) is designed to give the candidate a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of a professional field and training in methods of research. The final basis for granting the degree is the candidate's mastery of the subject matter of a broad field of study and the demonstrated ability to do independent research. In addition, the candidate must acquire the ability to express thoughts clearly in both oral and written language.

The DScD will prepare students to successfully enter the field of academic dentistry for careers as clinical or basic science researchers. The program combines the research and clinical strengths of the School, drawing faculty mentors from throughout the clinical and basic science departments. With the goal of providing the opportunity to pursue research across disciplines, students have the option to not only work with researchers from Penn Dental Medicine, but also with faculty from Penn’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Veterinary Medicine.
