The study program investigates the mechanisms of immune responses at the cellular and molecular level, under normal and pathological conditions. The subject of the study program within the concept of the complex biomedical fields is the issue of physical processes in a living organism, the influence of physical factors on living organisms, and the use of modern physical methods in biomedical fields. The goal of the doctoral study program Didactics of Chemistry is to prepare specialists to improve the quality of chemical education in the Czech Republic in accordance with current social needs and in accordance with the educational programs of advanced European countries based on scientific research results. Neuroscience occupies a special position in the system of scientific fields due to the high specificity of functional neural tissue that significantly differs from other tissues in almost all observable parameters at all levels. Added to this are the enormous heterogeneity in functional neuronal population and the fact that one of the cardinal functional manifestations of the outer world is a reflection of mental activity. Neuroscience brings together a range of sub-disciplines as neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry. The study program is carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Experimental Medicine and the Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Functionally defined discipline that studies regulatory functions of organs in response and adaptation of specific systems of the organism to changes in external and internal environment in normal and pathological states. There is the dominance of transition from studies of indirect manifestations of certain functions to studies of their own functional and regulatory mechanisms at the cellular and molecular level in order to use the acquired knowledge for the prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of human diseases. CERGE-EI (Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education - Economics Institute) is a joint workplace of Charles University and the Economics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Pharmacology and Toxicology are research topics that investigate the mechanisms of interaction of substances and medicaments with biological systems and track their positive and negative consequences for the organism. The final goal is to use this knowledge in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human and animal diseases. The research subject encompasses the study of both processes from the molecular level to affect the entire body and also research into clinical practice in patients. The determination of the latest research methods allows for interdisciplinary research at the receptor level, messenger systems, and transmission of genetic information. Created new disciplines such as pharmaco-biochemistry, pharmaco-genetics, pharmaco-economy, and others. The big advantage of pharmacology and toxicology studies is a close connection of the theoretical field with all the clinical fields that perform the treatment, prevention, and diagnostic. The study program in pharmacology and toxicology is therefore suitable not only for those interested in experimental research but also for those who plan their clinical work in the future. The study program is carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Experimental Medicine, the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, and the Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

History of medicine is an interdisciplinary field concerned with the history of medical science, history of particular specialties and their representatives, history of the medical profession and development of medical thought, history of training of health professionals, history of public health and health care facilities, incidence and alterations of disease entities as well as their treatment. At medical schools of universities in the world, the history of medicine has had a century-lasting tradition. The Institute for History of Medicine and Foreign Languages (thereinafter “Institute”) of Charles University – the First Faculty of Medicine, one of the first in Europe, has been active at the oldest medical faculty in Czechia since 1920. Studies in this program enable graduates of faculties of medicine and natural science as well as of various humanitarian fields to achieve the highest specialized education in this discipline. The Institute, which is the only in this specialty, is the central coordinating institution for the education of Ph.D. students of the history of medicine for other university schools in Prague and nationwide. According to article 3, paragraph 1, second sentence of the Code of Admission Procedure of Charles University, this program of study is offered without specialization.

The doctoral study program Area Studies focuses on various aspects of the contemporary (since 1990) development of Europe and North America, as well as on theoretical and methodological issues in the field of Area Studies.

The Doctoral Program in Modern History presents its Ph.D. students with the possibility of undertaking original research on topics dealing with Europe and North America in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, as well as relationships between the two continents.

The Ph.D. graduate has in-depth theoretical knowledge in all principal fields of Egyptology and a detailed overview and an up-to-date understanding of the current state of research and associated problems. On the basis of the upheld Ph.D. dissertation, he/she is able to demonstrate exceptional quality in his/her specific specialization. The scholarly, language and analytical proficiency and skills of the graduate make him/her fully equipped for a professional scholarly and pedagogic pursuit on an international level. The Ph.D. graduate may be employed in many top-rated institutions centered on the study of antiquity, as well as on the level of effective top executives in institutions partaking in cultural, political, economic or trade relations between the Czech Republic and Egypt.

Immunology is a dynamically evolving discipline integrating the knowledge of molecular and cell biology, physiology, histology, and functional morphology (in the context of evolution and ontogenesis) relevant to the immune system, a self-defense unit composed of functionally interacting molecules, cells, and tissues involved in immune responses. Immunology outputs show a major impact in a multitude of biomedical fields today. Topics such as transplantation, allergy, immune deficiency, autoimmunity, immunosuppression, immunotherapy, or anti-tumor immunity are typical areas of interest to immunologists. Immunology covers all levels of biological knowledge from molecules (cytokines, immunoglobulins, receptors, signaling molecules), cells (a wide array of immunocompetent cells), whole organisms (having transgenic animal models in use and interaction with the immune system is being investigated), and communities (evolution of immune mechanisms, e.g. frequencies of different alleles regulating the immune response within a population). Clinical immunology is an important emancipated immunology specialization, for which the human immune system is the object of studies, and understanding the mechanism of its action leads to the development of potential therapeutic applications. Typically, a four-year postgraduate's study of immunology deepens the master's education having more specialized lectures and mainly by intensive scientific education by the supervisor. Courses and lectures are provided by specialists from the Faculty of Science and Faculties of Medicine of Charles University and, to a great extent, experts from the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (mainly IMG and IM). Students are conducting doctoral theses, in these institutions mainly, but also in hospitals, clinical laboratories, or private companies - biotechnology development centers. Students are repeatedly reporting the progress of their doctoral theses at conferences, as of a poster or an oral presentation. For their projects, students can receive support through various grant calls. They learn about the international dimension of scientific cooperation in foreign laboratories. The output of scientific activities associated with the elaboration of doctoral theses is numerous posters and presentations at international conferences and publications in international impacted journals. The key activity of the Immunology program guarantor, as well as the immunologists at the Faculty of Science, is student project supervision, stimulation of their independent experimental work, and critical evaluation of the primary literature. The main objective of the study program special education is to prepare highly qualified staff for theoretical and fieldwork in the area of providing special education services in the widest possible range, according to the differentiated structure of the Czech study fields of special education (SSP – support for disabilities related to sight, hearing, physical or mental state, support for citizens with communication skill deficits, autistic spectrum disorders, behavioral disorders or support for people with social disadvantages) with special focus on the current issues of contemporary special education in the international context. The fundamental asset of the Ph.D. study in the field of special education is the preparation of specialists to succeed in independent scientific research projects, leading to their personal and career growth to enrich the scientific field of special education as a modern social science area.
