The SOAS Centre for Cultural, Literary and Postcolonial Studies (CCLPS) welcomes applications from MPhil/PhD students wishing to undertake research in the disciplines of Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies and Postcolonial Studies. The Centre has developed its own MPhil training programme which will enable research students to be registered in the Centre rather than in specific regional Departments or those of other disciplines.

On this programme we interrupt theory with practice, and practice with theory – we aim to engage you, intellectually and critically, and with enthusiasm, in a cultural studies project that questions everything.

This multi-disciplinary program promotes excellence and immerses doctoral candidates in research at the crossroads between Science, Technology and the Humanities, and the Social Sciences. British and American Studies are an essential part of European philological education in the current era of globalization. Implementation of this field of study in the Ph.D. form of study pursues the requirement to make a fundamental contribution to strengthening the theoretical and methodological basis of research and research proper in linguistic and literary disciplines as well as British and American realia and their teaching at a higher education institution. It makes a fundamental contribution to the education of new experts and thus maintains the continuity of this research in Slovakia. Our graduates can work as teachers, translators, interpreters, linguists, employees of travel offices and agencies, text proofreaders, editors, etc.

Graduates are highly qualified specialists in literary and cultural studies focused on English-speaking countries, especially the literature and cultures on the British Isles and in North America. They have a good command of theoretical and methodological approaches, are able to conduct independent research and to teach literary and cultural histories of the United Kingdom, USA, Ireland and other English-speaking countries, and related literary and cultural courses, at tertiary level. They can participate in team research projects and work in international research teams. Czech graduates have a good command of the terminology and style of the discipline in their mother tongue and possess basic knowledge of the reception of Anglophone literature in Czech culture.

Graduates of the doctoral program in Asian History and Culture are highly qualified specialists in the area of their specialization. Their excellent command of a selected Asian language enables them to work critically with primary sources, and they have a solid grounding in secondary literature and contemporary research. Their excellent level of erudition enables them to pursue careers in the academia (universities, research centers, etc.); they can, moreover, seek employment in cultural institutions, diplomacy, mass media, specialized think-tanks, etc.

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Intercultural Studies program is to equip students for the vocations of teaching and research in theological schools, colleges, and universities or for the academic study of missional and ministerial practice.
