57 Communication PhD Degree Programs

Upon successful completion of the study program students receive an international private Doctor of Philosophy in Management (Ph.D.) in Communication Studies degree awarded by the school's headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, based on the recommendation of the faculty of the local campuses where credits were earned.

The Doctoral Program in Communication and Information Studies organized at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) in Kaunas (Lithuania) aims to address the pressing issues in the contemporary and dynamically evolving field of media and communications, which is shaped by politico-economic, socio-cultural, and technologic factors, and explores media infused societal transformations and communicative impact on individual, groups, and social dimensions.

The Doctorate in Contemporary Communication and Information offers university training with a high level of specialization to meet the academic and scientific needs derived from the different lines of research related to Journalism and Audiovisual Communication.

Communication is one of the determining manifestations of life of contemporary society. We have become part of communities that are formed in communication processes taking place in reality as well as in digital networks. The study programME Semiotics and Philosophy of Communication focuses on the study of communication strategies, their preconditions and their effects. The peculiarity of this programme will appear in connection with the emphasis placed on the study of visual components of communication. This way we take into account the role that nowadays belongs to images in contemporary communication. It is also important to point out that the analysis of the semiosis, mediation and communication processes is extended to expose the manipulative character of some media discourse procedures which contributes to the specific features of this program.

The purpose of this program is to explore a wide range of forms of human communication from a variety of perspectives that connect the local and the global and are rooted in African contexts and experiences. As an inherently interdisciplinary and flexible program, the MA in Communication Studies intersects a multiplicity of fields and areas in the humanities and social sciences and offers an opportunity to explore their complementarity and interconnectedness.

Our MPhil and PhD degrees are grounded firmly in research theory and methods, while maintaining and encouraging a high degree of creativity and experimentation.

Questions around communication, its relationships with the social, political, cultural, and economic spheres, have acquired crucial importance in recent decades and driving a highly significant expansion in the interest and relevance of research undertaken in the field of the Communication Sciences. In parallel, changes in interpersonal, intergroup, and public communications practices, which have come to impact on contemporary societies, have driven the still greater relevance of educating and training highly qualified specialists able to develop fundamental and applied research projects correspondingly able to reply to the different communications challenges prevailing and expanding our knowledge about communication across its most diverse and different facets.

The doctoral program in Information and Communication in Digital Platforms, started in the academic year 2008/2009, aims to enable students to enhance knowledge at a doctoral level in the area of Communication and information Sciences on scenarios of technological mediation, and also provide skill development and training as independent researchers. The doctoral program is a strategic partnership on research between the UNiversities of Aveiro and Porto following the creation, in 2007, of the joint research unit DIGIMEDIA
