Biomedical informatics is a rapidly developing field whose content matter is, above all, the use of computers and information technologies (IT), system approach, statistics and epidemiology, and mathematical methodologies in medicine. Biomedical informatics is experiencing permanent development, and at present, it is focused on these major problem areas: the area of support to clinical decision-making, biomedical statistics, robotics, computer modeling, image processing; and the area of medical information systems. In clinical medicine, it means the following areas: clinical computing, analyses of images, issues of biosignal, computer modeling, artificial intelligence (including expert systems), support of decision-making, issues of statistics and biometrics, classification in medicine, computers in operating the devices, robotic and artificial organs. In the areas of information systems, the issues of their implementation in health care settings are tackled as well as specific questions of data protection and ethical problems and creation of hospital information systems. In the areas of theoretical medicine, it is mainly about modeling physiologic functions and issues of bioinformatics. The program is carried out without any specialization.

The Teaching Division of Biomedical Sciences offers a wide range of specialization tracks, combining research and studies in medical and life sciences with emphasis on understanding the functioning of the human body in situations of health and disease. The program prepares its graduates for teaching and research positions in academic institutions, and research and works in knowledge-intensive industries, hospitals, and healthcare systems.

Initiated about 20 years ago, the PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences is an interdisciplinary graduate program, providing rigorous training in modern cell and molecular biology. The departmental faculty provides a highly interdisciplinary and intensely collaborative training environment.

Our four years Ph.D. program in Biomedical Sciences has been designed to generate a new generation of researchers, who will shape research in Kazakhstan and on the international level. It addresses highly motivated students, who want to be part of a research community working on finding causes and treatments for a variety of different diseases. Our School has strong ties to the hospitals around Nur-Sultan and is therefore in an ideal position as a link between bench and bedside. Our researchers are working on various topics among them cancer, inflammatory and infectious diseases.

The subject of the study program within the concept of the complex biomedical fields is the issue of physical processes in a living organism, the influence of physical factors on living organisms, and the use of modern physical methods in biomedical fields. Biophysics, as an interdisciplinary field, offers doctoral (Ph.D.) study to university graduates of various specializations (medicine, natural sciences, mathematics, physics, etc.). The study program is carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

The study program Medical Biophysics is an interdisciplinary branch of science that employs virtually all biological fields and is focused on scientific study and independent research activities in interdisciplinary settings, from natural science up to clinical medical work. This branch of science originated from the need to separate medical applications observing interactions of physical fields and radiation with a living organism from the bulk of technological and biological disciplines.

Joint LSU and UT Ph.D. study in Biology consolidated research in the area of Biology, and they ensure more integrated and substantial investigations of scientific problems in biology.

Once accepted into either the Ph.D. in Biomedical Science, or the Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering program, and prior to the identification of a dissertation mentor, students will be advised by the First Year Advisory Committee (FYA). There is an FYA committee member at each partner institution.

Mercer's PhD in Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Program is designed to provide high-quality training to prepare graduates for a successful career in biomedical research, whether in academia or industry. The program is designed to be completed in five years with a possible extension if needed. Students will work closely with research mentors in Department of Biomedical Sciences on any of the School's three campuses: Columbus, Macon, or Savannah. The students will have the opportunity to choose research projects in various biomedical disciplines including biochemistry, neuroscience, microbiology, virology, cancer biology, cardiology, immunology, toxicology, and physiology.

The University of Texas School of Biomedical Informatics at Houston (SBMI) offers a full-time doctoral program in Biomedical Informatics designed to be inherently trans-disciplinary and integrative. Involving students with various backgrounds, the program emphasizes fundamental informatics concepts that can apply to all health disciplines.
