The aim of this four-year full-time (six-year part-time) research programme is the generation of a contribution to knowledge and understanding in Fine Art by means of an inquiry conducted through studio research and, where relevant, other research methods.

This four-year Ph.D. program meets the needs of students who want to pursue advanced studies and research in the History and Theory of Art, including the fields of art theory, art history, art criticism, and art management.

The Art Education didactics Ph.D. study program supports areas of fine arts and its theory connected with the social science of education and didactics in a comprehensive realm of inquiry-based and international scientific approach. The Ph.D. program should strengthen the knowledge of art education and art reflection in the specialization of Art education and Creative arts majors thus being focused on the Art class didactics. The research area of the program then the main focus is to implement the model of reflective art which is targeted towards creative and inquiry-based art production which consequently leads towards the creation of methodologies and frameworks for didactic and pedagogical transformations in the fine and creative arts. A candidate is required to produce a scholarly thesis, normally between 70 000 and 80 000 words, that contributes new knowledge and understanding to an aspect of the visual arts or an aspect of visual culture in a wider sense. The topic of study is identified by the candidate himself or herself, in consultation with an appointed supervisor, and is developed into a proposal that must be approved by the Higher Degrees Committee of the Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture.

The purpose of the program is to enable candidates to undertake research at the most advanced academic level culminating in the submission, assessment, and acceptance of a thesis. The candidate is required to demonstrate high-level research capability and make a significant and original academic contribution to the frontiers of art and/or design. In certain instances, creative work such as designed artifacts, public performances, public exhibitions, or other practice-based outputs may constitute the partial fulfillment of the research requirements.

The School provides expert supervision across the spectrum of art and writing practice, art and design history and theory, curating, and criticism. The Doctoral Program in History, Geography and History of Art, aims to complete the training needs of doctoral students, their methodological updating and initiation to research through the completion of the Doctoral Thesis. Doctoral students are offered training that enables them to carry out basic and applied research.

This MPhil/PhD in Creative Arts and Cultural Industries research degree provides advanced training and research experience at a doctoral level in the broad areas at the intersection of the Arts and cultural production and the cultural economy. It will be particularly focused on the area of Cultural and Creative Industries practice and policy, work and social justice in the cultural industries, including issues such as curation, the politics of cultural production, independent cultural economies and moral economies.

The study program in theory and critics of arts is realized within interdisciplinary context with focus on three areas: theory and history of architecture, musicology. Programme‘s doctoral students are encouraged to apply various theoretical models and methodological tools of humanities, social and technological sciences besides the classical methods of the critics of arts using both internal scientific resources of Kaunas University of Technology and those of their international partners.
