PhD in Computational and Applied Mathematics The study program combines studies with active work in the field of mathematics and with solving problems. The problems students solve come from real life. The methods used for solving the problems benefit from new possibilities of computing and reflect current progress in the field of applied mathematics. Graduates find their employment in research departments of software companies and industry companies, in science institutions, or possibly at universities.

Mathematical modeling is the process of developing mathematical descriptions, or models, of real-world systems. These models can be linear or nonlinear, discrete or continuous, deterministic or stochastic, and static or dynamic, and they enable investigating, analyzing, and predicting the behavior of systems in a wide variety of fields.

PhD Thesis Research in Pure & Applied Mathematics

Graduates with a master’s in applied mathematics can expand their subject matter expertise by choosing a Ph.D. in applied mathematics at Florida Tech. The Department of Mathematics offers a program of study leading to the Ph.D. degrees in mathematics and in applied mathematics. Most Ph.D. students also earn an M.S. degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics as part of their program.

The Integrated Applied Mathematics (IAM) Ph.D. is a unique applied mathematics program designed to facilitate interdisciplinary research among graduate students and participating faculty. This interdisciplinary program allows students to explore the frontier where the sciences meet cutting-edge mathematical analysis and high-performance computing.

The Doctoral School of Applied Informatics and Applied Mathematics started its activities. in 2009. Its aim is to train researchers – mainly with an engineering background – who are familiar with the methods and techniques of informatics, computer science, and applied mathematics, and can solve real industrial research and development tasks using multi-disciplinary knowledge, communication skills, and teamwork experience.

The Department of Mathematics takes seriously three aspects of mathematics within its graduate training: 1) Applied Mathematics: mathematicians help directly in the solution of problems which arise in other areas of human endeavor, 2) Mathematical Education: training others how to develop solutions on their own, and 3) Pure Mathematics: they expand the reach and clarify the understanding of mathematical thought itself.
