Effective sports and recreation managers plan, organize and direct the operations of sports and fitness programs, activities and services. Whether working with a professional sports team, at a commercial fitness business or for a parks and recreation department, you’ll need competencies in marketing, leadership and project management to be successful. As a JMU sport and recreation management major, you will develop leadership skills through sound theoretical course work, innovative learning activities and mentoring opportunities. All of your major requirements are met through small classes, team learning experiences and meaningful personal contacts with faculty and industry professionals. With an emphasis on applied practical knowledge, your required internship will augment your classroom learning as you work alongside dynamic industry professionals in premier sport and recreation organizations. Along the way, your required classes will also earn you a useful general business minor. This program will challenge you to think critically, use technology and appreciate the global community.

A BS in Recreation Management with an individualized concentration prepares students to explore the contribution of recreation in concert with a minor or complementary area. This concentration allows for students in consultation with an advisor, to develop a program that facilitates their special expertise in selected complementary areas of foci including concurrent completion of a minor (e.g., entrepreneurship; aging studies; environmental science; non-profit studies; sports management; tourism and events management; health promotion; kinesiology; sport and computer game design). These students will complete coursework that addresses their own passion and goals while meeting educational needs to prepare for graduate school or professional pursuits. In turn, they will be addressing the needs of a broader community.

The sport and recreation leadership degree program is designed to empower students with the education and skill sets necessary to succeed and become a leader in the sport or recreation industries. Sport and recreation are competitive markets, so our faculty is comprised of professionals who have actually worked in a sport and/or recreation field. Real-world experience and understanding of the practical knowledge and skills that students will need in their careers provide the edge that they will need to move ahead and stay ahead of the herd.
