This course is an overview of Oriental Medicine concepts and terminology.

The American Liberty University Department of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine offers a course of study leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. The doctoral program is research oriented and is designed to provide the theoretical and scientific knowledge necessary for scholarly pursuit in oriental medicine. Students are required to show competence in appropriate areas relevant to their major area of study by completing theory and research courses in oriental medicine and related disciplines.

Contemporary Oriental Medicine (COM) is a modern paradigm which incorporates the strengths of diverse traditional practice into a single workable model, characterized by an emphasis on diagnosis and lifestyle. COM exceeds state educational standards, enabling practitioners to collaborate effectively with Western Medicine professionals.

Admission to the professional doctoral program requires the satisfactory completion of a Master’s degree or Master’s level program in Oriental Medicine from an ACAOM accredited or candidate Acupuncture & Oriental medicine program or its international equivalent.

Oriental medicine is one of the oldest systems of medicine in history and has been used for thousands of years to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. It is based on the belief that qi (the body’s vital energy) flows along meridians (channels) in the body and keeps a person’s spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical health in balance.

The Master of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM) requires 227 quarter credits (3030 hours) including 990 hours of Clinical training to complete the program. The normal program length of MSOM is 4 years. MSOM program was created to educate students in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine while providing the population of Northern Virginia and its surrounding areas with the best alternative medicine treatments. Students are provided a solid foundation in the principles of Oriental Medicine as well as Western Allopathic Medicine.

The Master of Oriental Medicine program is comprised of the same courses that are contained in the Masters of Acupuncture but add an additional trimester that addresses Chinese Herbology and related studies.

AIMC Berkeley’s Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM) program is designed for future acupuncturists who want to practice Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with a strong emphasis on integrative medicine.

The goal of the Master of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (MAOM) program is to train you to become a licensed acupuncturist.

The length of the Professional Doctorate program in Oriental Medicine PD in Acupuncture program is four (4) academic years in length. The program consists of three (3) years of foundational studies in the MSOM program and additional studies of advanced courses. The PD in Oriental Medicine is composed of 2122 didactic/lab hours and 1110 clinical training hours.

Our other four Diploma Course disciplines combine to create the BSc Degree in Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine. In addition to the Diploma attendance/home study, you will be required to pay University fees, complete additional examinations and submit a dissertation in an approved area of medicine/illness/dysfunction/TCM.

The Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MSAOM) degree program is designed to provide a comprehensive professional education in acupuncture and Oriental medicine that prepares graduates to practice in clinical settings. This program is combined with instruction in biomedicine and emphasizes an integrative and holistic approach to healthcare. Graduates of the MSAOM program become eligible to take the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) licensure examination and the California Acupuncture Board (CAB) licensure examination.
