Research is progressing at the Graduate School of Integrated Basic Sciences thanks to the establishment of its High-Tech Research Center, which integrates and concentrates research on advanced materials and, while promoting interdisciplinary information exchange, searches for new directions in fields related to materials science. Materials science plays a big role in the world of basic science, and much is expected from it in terms of solutions to energy and environmental problems. For this reason, Nihon University’s Graduate School of Integrated Basic Sciences promotes highly original and unique research based on materials science. Thus high hopes are placed on the development and results of Nihon University’s new distinctive research style which strategically puts personnel and funds into such projects, For example, there is the development of new high-performance materials that function under extreme conditions, development and evaluation of new energy materials like fuel cells and solar cells, development of new biomaterials using materials science methods, and shedding light on global environmental change by looking at the Earth as a material circulation system and using analytical methods from materials science. It is extremely important for both graduate and undergraduate students in the natural sciences to become familiar with cutting-edge research equipment, and at our Center students have the opportunity to participate in real research projects to get a feel for the latest research methods and the current flow of research.

The Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established at the same time as the merger of Keio University and Kyoritsu College of Pharmacy in 2008. The research and educational activities of the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences are not limited to the areas of fundamental pharmaceutical sciences, but also extends to applied pharmaceutical disciplines, such as drug delivery and drug targeting, clinical pharmaceutics, clinical pathophysiology, clinical drug evaluation, drug informatics, evidence-based medicine, and regulatory sciences. This school is open for graduates from departments/schools of pharmaceutical sciences (4-year program) and those who have received education in equivalent level at other departments/schools.

The Division of Advanced Sciences gives students a deeper understanding of the specialized disciplines of mathematics, physics, chemistry/biochemistry, and computer science, and equips them with well-grounded scientific analysis and rational processing skills based on the basic sciences. Students in the doctoral program will work on certification for researchers who will internationally excel.

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (4-year program) was established in 2004, and in 2006 we began a 6-year program which focuses on developing pharmacists who can contribute to community-based healthcare through drug therapy.

Biomedical Sciences was founded as a new academic field that links biosciences such as genomics and neurology with the development of cutting-edge medical technology related to organ regeneration and artificial organs. This field has made rapid developments and becoming increasingly vital.

The Department of Astrophysics and Atmospheric Sciences in the Faculty of Science aims to nurture the kind of individuals that the university seeks to nurture outlined in the school philosophy of Kyoto Sangyo University into people with the ability to understand and elucidate various physical phenomena, on a scale ranging from the atmosphere of the Earth to the universe as a whole, as well as the ability to apply and convey the specialized knowledge acquired.

The characteristic of education and research in the Department of Marine Bioresources is that it covers various fields from natural science to social science. We tackle various problems related to the sea, rivers, and lakes from various perspectives, and the activities of graduates are diverse.

We train our students to become scientists and engineers with broad viewpoints on natural science, problem-solving abilities in local/global fields, and the spirit of inquisitiveness by teaching computer science as the mathematical basis for informatics and information engineering as applications of informatics in various scientific fields.

By studying the basics of natural science in the fields of physics, chemistry, and biology, we nurture students with the ability to understand and explore the phenomena of life at a cellular and molecular level and take an integrated approach across the fields of medicine, engineering and agriculture.

Students in this department aim to acquire specialized learning in pharmaceutical sciences and research abilities, focusing on basic pharmaceutical sciences. The curriculum is composed of eight lectures on specialized topics, seminars, and specialized experiments. Students take the required credits, work on their own research topic under the guidance of their academic advisor, and write a master's thesis.

The Graduate School of Science and Technology (Doctoral Course) consists of two courses of Advanced Materials Science and Technology and Safety Science and Technology. The former covers the development of useful materials and their application technology and the latter does crisis-controlling technology for natural and human-originating disasters in the highly developed society.
