In this course, we will explore the diverse marine ecosystems of the Pacific side of Costa Rica through immersive field studies, we will focus on rocky reef ecology, mangrove ecosystems, intertidal zone ecology, plankton ecology, marine biodiversity, conservation practices, local fishing, and the role of genetics in marine conservation.

The tropics are one of the most diverse regions on Earth, and it hosts 80% of the planets terrestrial species and 95% of the corals and mangroves. The health and conservation of the tropical ecosystems are vital for life on Earth and the general well being of humans. Many foods and medicine resources come from the tropics, and the balance of the region impacts not only the world economy but also the global biological diversity.

This MSc in Ecology and Society has been designed in response to the currently recognized global need for Master's-level trained Ecologists to address local to international level environmental issues. Students will gain the knowledge and skills to characterize, understand, restore, manage and maintain the planet’s ecosystems.

The marine and coastal sciences constitute a series of disciplines that are derived from the natural sciences and the social sciences, formed for a global action within what has been called the management of the marine and coastal zone. A systemic and interdisciplinary vision is required, which calls for the training of a professional capable of interacting with the natural and social environment existing in marine and coastal areas.
