The Master in Music Therapy, designed for both psychology and education professionals, prepares you to intervene in improving communication skills and in the physical, cognitive and socio-emotional rehabilitation of various groups, promoting the health of users through different musical techniques. The MA in Music Therapy is a two-year full-time program of study which prepares graduates for professional practice as a music therapist. The course requires a high level of music skill at entry allowing students to make the transition to the use of these music skills in therapeutic work with a range of client groups in different contexts. Students attend clinical placements throughout each semester of the course; these are usually offered at various sites in Ireland but sometimes can be offered abroad. Music therapy theory, research skills, sensitivity to cross-cultural issues and the use of the self in relating to others form the basis of studies to prepare students for work in the clinical practice context.

The Bachelor of Music Therapy degree program prepares students for a rewarding career in music therapy and requires extensive training in both musical and clinical skills. The music therapy program was established in 1980. This is the only music therapy program in the state of Oklahoma. Students may pursue either Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy or Equivalency/Registration in Music Therapy at SWOSU, both will satisfy the required eligibility for taking the National Certification Examination for Music Therapists for the credential of Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC).

Music therapy being a scientific practice that has knowledge and modes of production of art, aesthetic thought, especially music in the health space, that of mental health, its object of study is focused on the relationship of the subject with the sound-body-music, understanding this relationship as a complex, aesthetic, discursive phenomenon and a linking experience.
