The program Veterinary Medicine aims at educating highly skilled veterinary surgeons capable of working in the private and state network of veterinary services.

Conservation Medicine (Online Learning) MVetSci, PgDip (ICL), PgCert (ICL), PgProfDev is an established field that continues to evolve as we develop our ability to study the complex relationships and interactions between animal health, human health and ecosystem health. It emerged in the 1990s as a response to the need for a more holistic and interdisciplinary approach to the conservation of biodiversity. In particular, the importance of health in many conservation issues was widely recognised.

The coursework master’s degree curriculum consists of compulsory core and elective theoretical modules (90 credits) as well as a mini-dissertation (90 credits).

This Program is offered as a course-work master’s Program with modules in the advanced fundamentals of pharmacology and regulatory pharmacology. The course is designed to assist persons working in the field of regulatory veterinary pharmacology and covers training in the fundamentals (pharmacokinetics theory, basic pharmaceutics and pharmacodynamics theory), pharmacokinetic modelling, pharmacodynamics data analysis, veterinary legislation; preclinical toxicology, dossier evaluation; good laboratory practice, good clinical practice and good manufacturing practice.

In the veterinary management of animals, anesthesia (rendering animals unconscious to permit procedures) and analgesia (reducing the pain an animal is suffering) have vital importance in improving animal welfare, as well as permitting ongoing developments in medical and surgical advances. Faculty involved in the program have interests ranging from microbiology, ecology, immunology, nutrition, food science, bio-engineering, veterinary medicine, public health, human health, bioinformatics, mathematical modeling, microbiome, neuroscience, and others. The program encourages co-mentorship from different disciplines but also accepts students working in traditional fields. We have a strong international component and diversity of ideas and innovation is valued. Strong student involvement and participation in the program is sought. Training involves classes, laboratory research, outreach activities, teaching, and direct participation in a seminar series. Students are supported by graduate teaching, graduate assistantships, and scholarships provided by the program. This program is individually designed to support the needs of innovative research. Graduate students are expected to be major participants in the scientific output of the program.

Over the past 30 years, interventions, for reasons of health, welfare and the conservation of free-living wild animals, have been undertaken with increasing frequency. Specialist veterinary expertise is required in order to diagnose and control diseases in wildlife.
