The University of Lausanne (UNIL) and the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO) are offering a joint Master of Science (MSc) in Health Sciences including five orientations. It is aimed at students who hold a Bachelor’s in one of these disciplines. This innovative, advanced, interprofessional course is the only one of its kind in Switzerland and allows students to develop and enhance both specific knowledge in their own discipline and a broader understanding of the issues across the five professions.

Organised by the Institute of Higher Education and Research in Healthcare – IUFRS, the aim of the course is to train you to work as an advanced practice nurse (APN), providing direct care to patients and their families, according to your clinical orientation and as part of a nurse-doctor partnership. The Master of Science in Advanced Nursing Practice (MScIPS) is the only course of its kind in Switzerland and prepares students to work as an advanced practice nurse in one of the four following orientations, to be chosen at the time of enrolment.

The Master of Science in Sustainable Management and Technology (MSc SMT) aims at equipping the entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs of the future with the knowledge and skills enabling them to steer the transition toward a more resilient, environmentally responsible and inclusive economy while harnessing the power of technology. The program’s target is building competences along three dimensions: technology & innovation, economics & management, tools & skills for developing sustainable solutions. The SMT Master program is unique and totally innovative in that it focuses on all the three dimensions simultaneously and in a balanced manner.

An interdisciplinary programme at the interface of Geosciences and Environmental Sciences. A general reflection on the organisation of territories, of technical networks and of spatial, natural and human systems on different spatial scales. A reflection on the transformations of urban spaces in a perspective of sustainable development : eco-urban planning, city policies, urban planning.

The Master of Sciences in Biogeosciences is the result of the integration of two fields of natural sciences: biology and geology. It reflects the emergence of new fields of research in the many areas of contact between these two disciplines. The objective of this Master’s degree is to train you in the field of integrated natural sciences or Biogeosciences. It aims, through training based on the most modern techniques, to provide the essential knowledge and tools necessary for the discovery, understanding and management of natural environments in perpetual evolution on scales that are variable in time and space.

The primary objectives of the various modules of the MScE are to introduce, to analyze and to apply state-of-the-art methods in economic and econometric research. It thus offers foundations in economic analysis and its applications which are key towards making real analytical and managerial contributions in both public and private sector positions, or in the world of academic research.

New technologies, globalization and exploding digital data drive our world into new challenges that will only be taken up by managers and leaders equipped with the finest skills and knowledge. The orientation in Business Analytics provides students with knowledge to extract the information from data to make efficient decisions and to improve their performance. The orientation in Strategy, Organization & Leadership offers qualifications for a wide range of positions (consultant, analyst,etc.) but also for developing one’s own entrepreneurial venture.

The orientation in Corporate Finance focuses on Investments, Distribution & Risk Management in order to a conduct thorough financial analysis of various companies. The orientation in Asset and Risk Management requires highly quantitative skills in order to make the best possible investment decisions considering the financial risk. In the new orientation in Financial Entrepreneurship and Data Science, students will get, in addition to a traditional finance curriculum, training on entrepreneurship - that is, how to create their own company, as well as training on the challenges that large data-sets represent.

Training focused on the acquisition of the skills necessary for the development of new preclinical and clinical medical applications, with lessons on the normal and pathological functioning of the large systems of the human organism. Much emphasis is placed on learning techniques used in medical biology. There are three specialization streams: “Immunology and cancer”, “Neurosciences” and “Pharmacology and toxicology”.

Human activities are a regular cause of imbalances in natural systems and the societies that depend upon them, on the local, regional or global scale. Understanding the underlying physical, chemical and biological processes is essential for resolving contemporary environmental problems. This understanding is represented in the form of models that allow informed management decisions to be made. However, these models must take into account data gathered through observation and monitoring of the phenomena concerned. Otherwise, the information they provide will be of little real value.

This Master’s degree offers a complete basic education for future actuaries. An actuary is a business professional who deals with the financial impact of risk and uncertainty, typically in insurance firms, multinationals and pension funds. Most of the subjects taught involve applied mathematics, the actuary’s most important working tool. Good knowledge of management, finance, economics and information technology is also necessary to ensure an adequate level of professional expertise.

The Master of Science in Earth Sciences offers you a multidisciplinary course combining fundamental sciences and practical applications, which will give you the tools you need to become a versatile key player in the transition to a sustainable future. The cross-cutting programme provides leading-edge knowledge in a wide range of skills from the deep Earth, the geobiosphere and climatology to geological risks, geoenergies and mineral resources. The interactive teaching combines lectures, practical work and a large number of excursions to natural sites in the Alps and elsewhere around the world. It is delivered by specialists in Earth and environmental sciences from the universities of Lausanne and Geneva, who provide a permanent link to developments at the forefront of research in the areas taught to ensure a modern approach to Earth Sciences. The new programme, which has been fundamentally reworked, comes into effect in the autumn semester of 2022.

Placed under the aegis of the University Institute of Training and Research in Patient Care (IUFRS), this programme is intended to train you as specialist nursing clinical practitioners (ICLS), to optimise patient and family-centred care, embed results in clinical practice and develop clinical leadership in nursing. You will be preferred partners for interdisciplinary work in patient care and health promotion. The MScSI teaches skills grouped in the following four areas: direct clinical practice and consultation; clinical project management; team guidance and coaching; and research. These skills will enable you to play a leading role in health-care organisations, ensuring the ongoing renewal of nursing practices. You will contribute to organisational changes and any necessary developments in the health system.

The Master of Science in Medical Biology degree is intended for students who are interested in biological research in the medical field. This Master's program focuses on the acquisition of key areas of expertise necessary for the development of new pre-clinical and clinical medical applications. This training gives students an in-depth knowledge of basic cellular functions, systems that transmit signals inside and among cells, human biology, and the normal and pathological functioning of the most important systems of the human organism.

The Master of Science in Molecular Life Sciences is intended for students who are fascinated about the exploration of life at the molecular level. This Master's programme provides in-depth teaching of current knowledge in genomics, molecular genetics, cellular, developmental and organismal biology – spanning studies of humans and other animals, plants and microorganisms – and the experimental and computational approaches used to acquire this knowledge.
