Public health nursing is an independent nursing occupation in Japan. All public health nurses (PHNs) are educated as nurses and public health nurses and have licensure as a registered nurse and separate licensure as a PHN. The minimum length of education and training required to receive licensure in Japan is three years for nurses and one year for PHNs. There are various PHN educational programs in Japan, such as graduate school Master’s courses; undergraduate courses; junior college non-degree courses; four-year special training college courses for nurses and PHNs; and one-year PHN schools. Our faculty believes that PHNs should be educated and trained at the graduate level to improve the quality of their practice, so OUNHS was the first school in Japan to establish a Master’s degree PHN course in 2011.

Midwifery is an independent nursing occupation in Japan. All midwives are educated as nurses and midwives and have licensure as a registered nurse and separate licensure as a midwife. The minimum length of education and training required to receive licensure in Japan is three years for nurses and one year for midwives. There are various midwifery education programs in Japan, such as graduate school Master’s courses; undergraduate courses; undergraduate non-degree programs; undergraduate special courses; junior college non-degree programs; and vocational schools. The current midwifery environment in Japan is characterized by the progression of our declining birthrate, the aging of expectant mothers, a lack of obstetricians, a decrease in parturient facilities, and a concurrent advancement of perinatal medicine and assisted reproductive technology. Therefore, midwives are required to possess advanced diagnostic and practical midwifery skills and the ability to collaborate with other medical professionals including obstetricians.

This faculty was opened as the first coeducational faculty of nutrition in Japan. It takes pride in being a traditional faculty of nutrition and has produced many registered dietitians and nutrition teachers, medical technologists, and food sanitation inspectors (administrators) who are involved in the maintenance and advancement of human health. The course of Nutritional Sciences and Dietetics for producing national registered dietitians, and Course of Medical Technologies for producing medical technologists, were established to provide human resources with a rich education and high degree of professionalism.

We have designed a special course in the Field of Nursing. Specialized courses comprise of cancer nursing, women’s health nursing, child nursing, nursing management, geriatric nursing, mental health nursing and chronic care nursing, and community care. Health problems and liver problems have become diversified and complicated, and consequently, the environment surrounding nursing has changed dramatically. In this field, we expect the students to acquire the ability to conduct theoretical research for nursing practices as well as practical capabilities in nursing. We also emphasize the ability to solve problems in terms of the QOL of the people with complex nursing problems at all levels of health, i.e. from the period of disease prevention, recovery, and up to the end-stage diseases.

The Master of Science Program is comprised of two years of course work focused on a “Health and Sports Science Specialization.”

The degree fields in the Master’s program are Fundamental Sciences for Nursing, Synthetic Nursing, Clinical Nursing, Extensive Nursing, and Women’s Health & Midwifery, each composed of one to three study areas. Research courses are offered in each specialty. Certified Nurse Specialist courses (Cancer Nursing, Family Health Nursing, Gerontological Nursing, Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing) are offered in the study areas of Adult Nursing (Chronic), Child Nursing, Gerontological Nursing, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. A Certified Nurse Administrator course is offered in Nursing Administration, and an Advanced Practice course is offered in Women’s Health & Midwifery. The Master’s program is designed to develop outstanding nursing researchers and educators, while also training professionals who have advanced knowledge and practical skills who can take on leading roles in nursing practice.

The Course of Food Science and Nutrition is an integrative discipline, in which the principles of biological and physical science are used to study the nature of foods and the consumption and utilization aspects of food and its constituents. Students enrolled in this program are encouraged to study subjects from the molecular level to health and environmental issues relating to food. Through the programs offered in the Food Science and Nutrition course, students are expected to understand the roles of nutrients in supporting vital functions or life functions, the principles underlying the processing and preparing of food, and toxicology. They are also to gain the laboratory disciplines and application skills in biotechnology, toxicology, microbiology, biochemistry, and nutritional sciences. Such knowledge and skills prepare them to work in the food industry in research and development of food products and processes, to serve in government regulatory agencies as food specialists and health advisors, and to find positions in academic institutions as teachers and researchers. Graduates find employment in food and health-related industries and in governmental agencies and laboratories. Those who are certified as junior and senior high school teachers find positions in schools as a teacher of home economics. Some graduates enter the Ph.D. course of food science, nutritional science, and biological sciences.

Focusing on specific issues in nursing practice, we will develop problem-solving abilities and develop human resources who can demonstrate the following abilities in practice. 1. Ability to take charge of guidance for juniors in various specialized fields This graduate school has three specialized nurse courses, "Chronic Nursing", "Pediatric Nursing", and "Cancer Nursing". Each course has the ability to carry out activities such as outstanding nursing practice in the field of nursing, education for nurses, consultation with care providers, coordination of stakeholders, research in practice, and ethical coordination. We have set a group of subjects required for studying each of the three specialized nurse courses, and by taking these courses, we have taken courses equivalent to the specialized subjects of each specialized area.

Graduate School of Nursing will foster researchers and educators who will develop nursing science. We will apply them with the broad viewpoint and the foundation in nursing, in addition to ones’ own specialty and deepened knowledge. We also will foster advanced and specialized personel and will contribute to every range of regional society and various nursing practices. This program is conducted at a graduate school certified by the Foundation of the Japanese Certification Board for Clinical Psychologists. The curriculum also allows students to take the courses necessary to obtain certification as a certified psychologist. This program trains capable clinical psychologists and Certified Public Psychologists who can provide appropriate psychological support and conduct research in various areas such as “public health,” “welfare services,” “education,” Studies in Clinical Psychology“law & crime,” and “industry & labor” in the future. Students will study various therapy techniques such as psychoanalytic psychotherapy, client-centered therapy, analytical psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and family therapy, and they will learn through practice in a number of cases under a system of close supervision. In addition, a major feature of this program is its system of postgraduate school education. This program fosters personnel with a dynamic perspective who are proficient in psychotherapy and projective tests. Moreover, graduates have a roughly 100% rate of employment, and about 95% of previous graduates have been certified as clinical psychologists.

The Graduate School of Nursing aims to develop nursing experts and educators with advanced levels of knowledge and capabilities, who can contribute to the development and promotion of healthcare and human welfare, as well as progress in nursing, both in local and global communities.
