The MSc Development Economics is the flagship Master's programme offered by the SOAS Economics Department. It integrates two fundamental intellectual traditions that our unique Department has cultivated for decades: a rigorous pluralist theoretical approach to economics and a focus on real-world development issues using modern economic analytical tools.

MSc Economics and Finance for Development course will provide you with a systematic understanding of economic approaches to development and in particular, the role of finance and financial institutions. Students will be able to evaluate the merits of the various mechanisms of financing development and to understand the basis for financial policy.

The MSc Global Development programme provides a solid interdisciplinary social science formation in development theory and practice and develops students’ capacities for independent and critical analysis. The MSc in Economics and Development offers lessons and research projects in the heart of Florence. With its interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of economics and an excellent student to staff ratio, this MSc offers an international environment thanks to its students which come from all over the world, and its teaching staff from the Department of Economics and Management, the Department of Statistics, the Department of Law, and the Department of Political Science of the University of Florence together with visiting professors from other universities around the world.

This MSc Economics with Data Science program is suited to both professionals and recent undergraduates, following a related degree in economics, computer science, physics, maths, or engineering, with exposure to quantitative methods and/or programming. Combining theoretical and practical teaching by experts in both economics and mathematical engineering disciplines, the programme provides training on essential programming and data science software, alongside robust economics content distinctive to this programme.

They will be able to work in multicultural contexts and make strategic decisions in all areas of a business.

Gain a distinctive approach to the study of development with this unique Political Economy of Emerging Markets MSc. This is a multidisciplinary social science programme in which you will learn about the national development strategies of middle-income countries, and study the politics and institutions that underpin these strategies.

This Advanced Master’s programme offers methodological and practical insights into development evaluation, its relevance and challenges.

The programme aims to explore the general history of production and distribution, population and living standards, institutions and social organisation. You will gain knowledge to carry out investigations and analyses concerning changes in social and economic conditions under different circumstances. The programme is organised into three different tracks: Economic History, Economic Demography or Economic Development. When applying for the programme, you also select which track you want to specialise in. The different tracks share courses to some extent.

In this double degree programme, you spend the first year at either Universidad Carlos III de Madrid or the University of Groningen. The programme trains the next generation of analysts, researchers and professionals in the field of development and growth. It combines the expertise of three highly ranked European universities into a common platform with leading scholars in economics, economic history and demography. A hallmark of the programme is the emphasis on the personal contact between professors and students, achieved by small classes. You will, in close supervision of a highly qualified faculty member, complete two independent research projects (theses) both at the end of year 1 and year 2 of the programme.

The 36-credit-hour Master of Science in Organizational Management (MSOM) program blends coursework in organizational management, economic development, and entrepreneurship. Graduates will be uniquely prepared to start their own businesses, foster the development of new enterprises in their communities, and facilitate a company’s evolution to a more innovative and growth-oriented corporate culture. The program also provides students an opportunity within each course to explore their own business and community enhancement projects.

The Master of Science in Agricultural and Resource Economics, Plan B, offered by the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, is a program of study consisting of 30 credit hours in coursework, plus the preparation of a technical paper.
