Sustainable Material Solutions with SUMA The SUMA master’s program aims to train tomorrow’s resource engineers to work collaboratively in a global world, gathering together some of the best educational programs in the field of sustainable materials engineering in Europe. The goal is to ensure young scientists obtain a solid background in chemistry and physics, with competencies for designing and tailoring new material systems for specific functions and with a specific view to the sustainability of processes and technologies in the field of material development.

The word Nanoscience refers to the study, manipulation and engineering of matter, particles and structures on the nanometer scale. Important properties of materials, such as the electrical, optical, thermal and mechanical properties, are determined by the way molecules and atoms assemble on the nanoscale into larger structures. Nanotechnology is the application of nanoscience leading to the use of new nanomaterials and nanosize components in useful products.

The Interuniversity Program in Food Technology (IUPFOOD) focuses on two technological dimensions of prime and crucial importance in food processing and preservation; the transformation (processing) of raw materials into products suited for human consumption; the role of postharvest and food preservation unit operations in delivering safe and nutritious foods to the end consumer. These two concerns are directly translated into the focus points of the IUPFOOD programme. The InterUniversity Programme in Food Technology (IUPFOOD) is jointly organized by KU Leuven and Ghent University (UGent). The programme builds on KU Leuven’s and UGent’s combined expertise in research and education in the field of food technology.

Bioinformaticians are distinguished by their ability to formulate biologically relevant questions, design and implement the appropriate solution by managing and analyzing high-throughput molecular biological and sequence data, and interpret the obtained results.

Our interdisciplinary Master of Bioscience Engineering: Human Health Engineering programme (HHE) is dedicated to training the next generation of experts in human health engineering.

The Master of Water Resources Engineering addresses water-related issues in developed and developing countries, with a focus on problems in the latter. The general program objective is to educate professionals and scientists who contribute effectively to the development and management of water resources on both a local and global scale.

The base of this program is the study of molecular and cellular processes active in micro-organisms, plants, animals, and humans. You acquire a thorough knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, nanobiology, physiology, and immunology.

Agro- and Ecosystems Engineering is about ensuring the prosperity and well-being of current and future generations in both the global North and global South. Agro- and ecosystems provide a wide range of essential goods and services such as food, water, energy, and biodiversity. Yet, the contemporary context of population growth, rapid urbanization, economic globalization, climate change, deforestation, soil pollution and degradation challenges the future provisioning of a sufficient quantity and quality of these goods and services.
