Taking advantage of generations of terrestrial and space-based instruments, the Master of Astronomy and Astrophysics trains students to study the origin, structure, and evolution of planets, stars, star systems, and the universe itself.

This degree is one of five tracks in the professional master’s program at Rice housed in the Wiess School of Natural Sciences and focuses on training students in Space Engineering and Science with the intent of creating new options for those students interested in working in the space technology industry or related government entities, e.g. NASA, as well as governmental relations positions in non-profit organizations, industry and academic institutions. The Master’s degree in Astrophysics and Cosmology aims to provide students with a comprehensive, up-to-date view of the main fields of modern Astrophysics, including astronomical detectors and techniques, black holes and neutron stars, cosmology, gravitational physics, planets, stars, and galaxies. Particular emphasis is placed on a solid background in Physics and the growing ties among Astrophysics and different branches of Physics in the coming era of multi-messenger observations.

What are the laws of nature governing the universe from elementary particles to the development of the solar system, stars and galaxies? In the Master’s Programme in Particle Physics and Astrophysical Sciences, you focus on gaining an extensive understanding of these phenomena. You will also acquire proficiency in the use of mathematical methods, IT tools and/or experimental equipment, as well as strong problem-solving and logical deduction skills.

Explore cosmology and astrophysics at an advanced level, with an emphasis on theoretical cosmology. Our focus is on theoretical and numerical cosmology in the pre-and post-recombination universe. This course is one of only two MScs in this subject area in the UK. It’s for you if you have graduated from a physics- or applied mathematics-based degree with a substantial physics component and wish to learn how to apply your knowledge to cosmology.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers programs of study leading to M.S. degrees with a track in Astrophysics. We offer a full range of graduate-level courses and research opportunities in astronomy, biophysics, condensed matter physics, cosmology, elementary particle physics, and quantum information.

This structured two-year programme offers you the opportunity to learn about the universe and apply your knowledge of physics in a vibrant and fast-developing area of science. The first semester is spent on core astronomy courses, including stellar structure and evolution and galactic dynamics. In the second semester, you will begin work on a 60 ECTS degree project under the supervision of internationally well-regarded professors, and this project continues over three semesters. You will also take four more courses broadening your knowledge of the most exciting areas of modern astrophysics, such as exoplanets and the early universe.

The M.S. in Astrophysics is a 30-credit graduate program. All students take two core courses, Radiative Processes (Physics 76700) and Computational Methods (Physics 78100), plus 9 credits of elective courses in either an astronomy pathway or a physics pathway; and complete a two-part thesis course (total of 6 credits) as the culminating experience.

The Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) offers graduate research based on multidisciplinary principles from mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, statistics and computer modeling to address some of the most challenging interdisciplinary questions about the past, present, and future state of the Earth system and other planets. Many of the research programs include field work in the United States and abroad. EAPS is well equipped with state-of-the-art computer and laboratory facilities for calculation, visualization and experimentation. Major research institutions,liberal arts colleges, government agaencies and industry now employ former students.

Astrophysics is a fundamental, curiosity-driven subject with a huge variety of ongoing research and a strong public interest.
